Charlamagne tha God suggested former President Trump is no longer interested in running for president, pointing to what he described as the GOP nominee’s lack of energy at a Tuesday rally in Michigan.
In a Wednesday segment of his show, “The Breakfast Club,” an audio clip of Trump from the rally in Howell, Mich., was played, during which the former president appeared to talk slower and lower than normal. “He don’t wanna be there no more, man,” Charlamagne said of the audio clip. “You can hear it in his voice. Donald Trump is over it. He does not want to be the Republican nominee no more.”
“He is hoping Republicans do him the way the Democrats did [President Biden],” he continued, referring to the pressure Democrats put on President Biden to withdraw from the race following his lackluster debate performance in June. Biden, 81, eventually gave in to the pressure after a tumultuous few weeks for the party, dropping out and endorsing Vice President Harris as his successor. Trump’s speech in Michigan focused on his tough-on-crime approach, arguing this would be key to winning the vote of suburban women this November.
Charlamagne said the former president, 78, sounded like he “wants to be put out of his misery.” “You can hear it in his voice,” he quipped.
The Hill reached out to the Trump campaign for comment. Charlamagne pointed to comments from former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who suspended her GOP presidential bid earlier this year. She said in January the “first party to retire its 80-year-old candidate” will “be the one who wins the election.”
“That’s why Democrats have so much energy right now. Republicans should’ve done the same,” he said. “There is no way Donald Trump should’ve been y’all’s nominee. There is no way.” The popular radio host has said he would “absolutely” endorse Harris, after previously saying that he would not endorse either Biden or Trump in the 2024 race. Since replacing Biden atop the Democratic presidential ticket, Harris has seen a surge in support from the party, and national polls show her slightly leading the former president. According to a polling index by Decision Desk HQ and The Hill, Harris has a 3-point lead over Trump as of Wednesday.
While Trump’s support has remained fairly steady, Harris has sparked a surge of enthusiasm among Democratic voters and is winning a chunk of “double haters” who supported neither Trump nor Biden.
