Every year, the Indian Premier League (IPL), the world’s richest cricket tournament, unveils rich talents. Only twice though has there been awed chatter about a young Indian pace bowler because of their exceptional speed. Umran Malik from Indian-administered Kashmir created a storm three years ago. In IPL 2024, it’s Mayank Yadav who is turning heads almost as quickly as he’s turning up the dial on speed guns. The 21-year-old lanky bowler from Delhi made his IPL debut for Lucknow Super Giants against Punjab Kings in March and set pulses racing with a terrific spell of fast bowling. He bowled a…

An extremely rare blind, hairy mole has been spotted and photographed in the Australian outback. The northern marsupial mole, or kakarratul, lives in one of the most remote parts of the nation and is so elusive that authorities don’t even know how many there are. The palm-sized creatures have silky golden locks, no eyes, a stumpy tail and flipper-like hands. Sightings of marsupial moles usually occur only a few times each decade. This mole was stumbled upon by Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Martu rangers – Aboriginal traditional owners who use cultural and local knowledge to look after their land – while they…

The legendary Tropicana has closed its doors, but Las Vegas’ raucous history is still celebrated in sites devoted to the mob, neon and even divorce. Las Vegas rose like a mirage from the lonely Nevada desert in the 1940s and has since gained a reputation for  looking forward and building upward without sentiment or regret. But even the most hard-hearted resident had to give pause last week when it was announced that the beloved Tropicana resort will be demolished and replaced by a Major League Baseball stadium. The hotel’s Instagram account was flooded with nostalgic laments: “So many memories!” “My heart is broken.” “Just so…

The popular weight loss drug Wegovy seems to provide more health benefits for people who have diabetes and a common kind of heart failure than just helping take off the pounds, according to a new study. The study, published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed how the drug helped people with Type 2 diabetes who also had one of the most common kind of heart failure, obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Researchers looking for clues about why some types of cancer are on the rise in younger adults say they’ve found an interesting lead: a connection to accelerated biological aging. Jamie Dimon believes artificial intelligence will have a huge impact on global business this year. Dimon, one of the world’s most influential business leaders, said in his annual shareholder letter Monday that while he doesn’t yet know the full effect AI will have on business, the economy or society, he knows its influence will be significant. “We are completely convinced the consequences will be extraordinary and possibly as transformational as some of the major technological inventions of the past several hundred years: Think the printing press, the steam engine, electricity, computing and the Internet, among others,” the JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO wrote in the…

Dealmaking is big business on Wall Street. When companies combine, or one company buys another, it creates opportunities for investors and banks to make money by providing advice or financing the transaction. Investors and employees often get a nice payout as well. But over the past few years, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), have been hard to come by. Goldman Sachs reported substantial drops in revenue last year as 2023 had some of the lowest M&A activity in a decade. Dealmaking activity has dried up as executives have contended with recession fears, decades-high interest rates and geopolitical tensions.Stephan Feldgoise, Goldman Sachs co-head of global…

J Cole says he “felt terrible” after releasing a song aimed at fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar last week, and vowed to pull the track off streaming services. Titled 7 Minute Drill, Cole’s song was a reply to Lamar’s verse on the hit single Like That, in which the star asserted his dominance of the rap game. Cole hit back by saying Lamar had “fallen off like the Simpsons” and called his latest album “tragic”. But speaking on Sunday, Cole apologised for his “lame” and “goofy” response. “I ain’t gonna lie to y’all the past two days felt terrible,” he told…

Larry David appears to pride himself on not caring what people think, which made the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” series finale, and the nod to criticism he received for “Seinfeld’s” sendoff 26 years ago, that much funnier. Yet, he also used the occasion as a trip down memory lane, weaving in highlights and callbacks to the HBO show’s 12 seasons, spread, remarkably, over twice as many years. With the benefit of hindsight, the season-long plot built around David violating Georgia’s Election Integrity Act, making him an unlikely and accidental hero, all served as a means of setting up what amounted to a “Seinfeld” replay.…
