Scientists are trying to create a new type of bread that is just as healthy as wholemeal but looks and tastes like its white counterpart. Aimed at lovers of white bread, the project has been funded by the government to improve the health benefits of UK food. The researchers plan to add small amounts of peas, beans and cereals to the bread mix, as well as bran and wheat germ that are normally removed from white flour. Bread makers have attempted to make their white loaves healthier in the past by adding bran to their flour, but their customers didn’t…

The founder of the world’s largest crypto exchange has been sentenced to four months in prison in the US for allowing criminals to launder money on his platform. Changpeng Zhao resigned from Binance in November and pleaded guilty to violating US money laundering laws. Binance was ordered to pay $4.3bn (£3.4bn) after a US investigation found it helped users bypass sanctions. Prosecutors had sought a three-year sentence for the former Binance boss. At a sentencing hearing on Tuesday in Seattle, Judge Richard Jones said Zhao put “Binance’s growth and profits over compliance with US laws and regulations”, according to the Verge. US…

Australian airline Qantas says it is investigating a privacy breach on its app that left customers with access to others’ personal details. Some users reported seeing several boarding passes and flight details belonging to strangers, including their names and frequent flyer information. Qantas said it fixed the problem about three hours after it was discovered, and apologised to customers. There was “no indication of a cyber security incident”, it added. “Current investigations indicate that it was caused by a technology issue and may have been related to recent system changes,” it said in a statement on Wednesday. Earlier, it had…

“Tens of millions” of people are using technical workarounds to secretly access WhatsApp in countries where it is banned, the messaging platform’s boss has said. “You’d be surprised how many people have figured it out,” Will Cathcart told BBC News. Like many Western apps, WhatsApp is banned in Iran, North Korea and Syria. And last month, China joined the list of those banning users from accessing the secure platform. Other countries, including Qatar, Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, restrict features such as voice calls. But WhatsApp can see where its users truly are, thanks to their registered phone…

The police arrived in force at dawn on Saturday, with orders to clear “infiltrators” from the Gaza war protest camp at Northeastern University in Boston. Within an hour, more than 100 people were under arrest, students and non-students alike, and many of their tents flattened or removed. A large counter-protest then formed, as officers from the state police in tactical gear hauled off their suspects. The scene was one of confrontation, and chaos. Northeastern campus administrators said they were compelled to call police as infiltration by outsiders “led to a clear escalation in tensions” and that an antisemitic slur had…

New York City’s Columbia University has begun suspending students involved in a pro-Palestinian protest on campus after they defied a deadline to disperse. College leaders earlier warned those who failed to disband from the two-week encampment by 14:00 EST (18:00 GMT) on Monday would face disciplinary action. But as the deadline passed, dozens of students rallied at the site. In Texas, police arrested dozens of protesters and dismantled their camp at the University of Texas at Austin. Officials there said protesters had ignored directions to take down their tents. The college said in a statement that “baseball-size rocks” had been…

The US secretary of state hopes Hamas will accept what he has called Israel’s “extraordinarily generous” offer for a Gaza truce and hostage release deal. Antony Blinken was speaking as a Hamas delegation discussed the new proposal with mediators from Egypt and Qatar. A source close to the talks told the BBC they were cautiously optimistic. The proposal includes a 40-day truce in return for the release of hostages and the prospect of displaced families being allowed back to northern Gaza. It reportedly also involves new wording on restoring calm meant to satisfy Hamas’s demand for a permanent ceasefire. The…

As Pro-Palestinian protests continue to sweep across major US universities, a unifying message has emerged. From Princeton University in New Jersey to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the same chant can be heard: “Disclose! Divest! We will not stop, we will not rest!” Signs marking the perimeter of the student encampment on Columbia University’s West Lawn display a similar message — from the Columbia University Apartheid Divest group — reading, “Divest all finances, including the endowment, from corporations that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide, and occupation in Palestine.” Israel denies accusations of genocide. The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary…

A proposed ban on menthol cigarettes in the US “will take significantly more time,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement Friday, delaying a decision that had posed political risks for President Joe Biden as he runs for re-election. “This rule has garnered historic attention and the public comment period has yielded an immense amount of feedback, including from various elements of the civil rights and criminal justice movement,” Becerra said. “It’s clear that there are still more conversations to have, and that will take significantly more time.” An administration official declined to specify further what…
