Turkey has suspended all trade with Israel over its offensive in Gaza, citing the “worsening humanitarian tragedy” in the strip. The Turkish trade ministry said the measures would be in place until Israel allowed an “uninterrupted and sufficient flow” of aid into Gaza. Trade between the two countries was worth almost $7bn (£5.6bn) last year. Israel’s foreign minister accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of acting like a “dictator”. Israel Katz said on X that Mr Erdogan was “disregarding the interests of the Turkish people and businessmen and ignoring international trade agreements”. He added that he had instructed the foreign…

Tyrese Maxey scored 46 points as the Philadelphia 76ers stunned the New York Knicks 112-106 in overtime to keep their Eastern Conference play-off first round hopes alive. The Knicks, leading by six points with 29 seconds remaining, looked poised to clinch the series before Maxey’s late burst, including a remarkable 34-footer from the logo which sent the game into overtime. The Sixers then triumphed in a back-and-forth tussle in New York to peg the Knicks back to 3-2 in game five of the best-of-seven series. “Season on the line, we fought for 53 minutes and never gave up,” said Maxey.…

The European Commission has opened formal investigation proceedings into Meta over its handling of political content, including a suspected Russian influence campaign. With elections looming in the EU and elsewhere, officials said they would assess whether the company’s approach to moderating disinformation on Facebook and Instagram breached EU law. Among the Commission’s concerns is Meta’s oversight of its advertising tools, and whether they had been exploited by “malicious actors.” The probe will also examine whether Meta is being transparent enough over its moderation of political content and accounts. “We have a well-established process for identifying and mitigating risks on our…

The Australian government has talked up its close ties with Delhi despite reports that two Indian spies were expelled from the country in 2020. In 2021, Australia’s intelligence chief said that foreign agents had been operating locally in the previous year – but he did not say their nationality. Multiple news outlets reported this week that they were from India. Australia has not confirmed or denied those reports but says it is keen to counter foreign interference. “I don’t propose to get into those stories,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the ABC on Wednesday. “We have got a good relationship with…

We could see the larger Chinese ship moving closer, both our ships going at high speed. The Chinese crew were close enough for us to see their faces. Two of them filmed us, as we filmed them. The BBC was onboard the Philippines coast guard vessel BRP Bagacay when it was accosted by Chinese vessels on Tuesday. Filipino crews raced to hang yellow foam barriers over the side, preparing for a collision. Suddenly the Chinese ship made a sharp turn across our bow, forcing the Filipino captain to slow down abruptly. The two vessels were less than five metres apart.…

Adverts shown during Amazon Prime shows and films have helped the tech giant to beat forecasts for sales and profit. Advertising revenue for the first three months of this year was 24% higher year-on-year, with the company making Amazon Prime adverts the default option for many customers over the period. Cloud services and its fastest-ever Prime delivery times also boosted results. Chief executive Andy Jassy said it was “a good start to the year”, although unions and employee groups say the push for delivery speed comes at the expense of staff. Mr Jassy said it was “very early days in…

Musicians and other celebrities should be protected by a law that would ban artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes in the UK, a group of MPs has suggested. The use of AI to impersonate the voices and images of well-known singers and rappers has been growing. In early April, Jess Glynne, Mumford and Sons, Sam Smith and Zayn Malik were among the British artists who signed an international open letter calling for more protection against “the predatory use of AI to steal artists’ voices and likenesses”. The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Music has now called on the government to regulate the use of AI in…

A police force has said results from using artificial intelligence (AI) “sadly” show how commonly drivers break phone and seatbelt laws at the wheel. Northamptonshire Police said it identified 114 drivers on mobiles and 180 without seatbelts during a one-week trial using AI technology. AI analyses images taken by roadside cameras and alerts police to evidence of potential offences. Using a phone while driving has been illegal since 2003. In April, a trailer mounted with cameras was parked alongside roads in Northamptonshire to take pictures of passing motorists. The pictures it singled out could be subsequently reviewed by officers. They…

New rules that tighten restrictions on China’s internet companies have come into effect today. The expanded State Secrets Law compels firms – including social media giants Tencent, ByteDance and Weibo – to take action if users post sensitive information. It requires “network operators” to monitor information being shared by users. The rules also describe how posts should be removed, records saved and reported to authorities. This is the law’s first update in more than a decade and is in line with President Xi Jinping’s focus on national security as the government cracks down on China’s vast technology industry. When the…
