Tottenham Hotspur walked out at Liverpool with the door ajar for their Champions League hopes, only for Ange Postecoglou’s fading side to trip and fall flat on their faces at Anfield. Do not be fooled by the 4-2 scoreline in Liverpool’s favour. It was flattery, doing Spurs a kindness their overall performance did not merit. It must also not deceive anyone in the Spurs camp as the dramatic decline, in a season that held much promise and optimism at one time, continues its sharp downward curve at a crucial point. Handed the opportunity to close a seven-point game on fourth-placed Aston…

The boss of Eurotunnel has insisted there will not be long queues of cars at its terminals when a new EU travel system starts in October. Brits heading to and from Europe will need to register fingerprints and a photo at the border, which has prompted warnings of delays. Eurotunnel chief executive Yann Leriche said journeys would take five-to-seven minutes longer, but extra lanes and technology mean the process will go smoothly. The BBC had the first look at new machines people will need to use at Folkestone or Calais. At the Port of Dover, Eurostar’s St Pancras terminus and…

Brewing giant Heineken says it is investing £39m in hundreds of its UK pubs and reopening 62 that were closed in recent years. The company says the cash injection in its Star Pubs chain will create more than 1,000 new jobs. The move will see Star make renovations at more than 600 hundred pubs, around a quarter of the 2,400-strong chain. The Netherlands-based firm says the locations that will see improvements reflect how many of its customers have cut back on how often they commute into city centres. The work will “concentrate on transforming tired pubs in suburban areas into…

Chad is set to become the first of Africa’s current junta-led states to move to democratic rule with Monday’s presidential vote. It will end a three-year transition imposed after the sudden death of long-serving leader Idriss Deby Itno while fighting rebels. But as his son, and successor, Gen Mahamat Déby is one of the favourites to win, there is some scepticism about whether this will bring about change. Prime Minister Succès Masra is among his nine challengers and is seen as his biggest rival. Ten other politicians who had been hoping to run, including two prominent figures, Nassour Ibrahim Neguy…

Under the rich, leafy cover of the Ukrainian spring, an artillery unit awaits. Only a fraction of their job is firing rockets from their 50-year-old launcher. Most of their time is spent digging a new bunker into the hillside. They’re outgunned and outmanned by the Russian invaders, 5km (3 miles) away in the eastern Donetsk region, who are inching closer. Incoming American ammunition is expected to help, but how the Ukrainian government is addressing its need to recruit is controversial. A new mobilisation bill passed earlier in April was criticised for not including a limit on time served. A clause…

Australia’s biggest airline Qantas has agreed to pay a A$100m ($66.1m, £52.7m) penalty to settle a legal case accusing it of selling thousands of tickets for flights it had already cancelled. Under the deal with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the firm will also launch a plan worth up to A$20m to compensate affected passengers. Qantas’ Chief Executive, Vanessa Hudson, said the move represented an important step toward “restoring confidence in the national carrier.” The so-called “ghost flight” case, which was launched by the ACCC in August, claimed that in some instances Qantas had sold tickets for flights…

Two Nasa astronauts are due to head for the International Space Station aboard a new spacecraft. Boeing’s Starliner will blast off from Cape Canaveral in Florida, in its first crewed test flight. The mission has been delayed for several years because of setbacks in the spacecraft’s development. If it is successful, it will become the second private firm able to provide crew transport to and from the ISS, alongside Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Nasa no longer wants to own and operate such vehicles, preferring now to buy the service from the commercial sector. The scheduled lift-off is set for 22:34 local…

The bodies of three tourists found in a well in Mexico’s north-west all had bullet wounds to the heads, authorities say. Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, 30 and 33, and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, disappeared on 27 April while on a surfing trip in Ensenada. Relatives of the three men identified their bodies on Sunday after travelling to Mexico to assist authorities, a state prosecutor said. Officials believe the men were attacked as they were trying to fend off an attempted theft of their pickup truck. The attackers wanted the vehicle for its tyres and shot…

Israel has closed the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza after Hamas fired rockets from within the strip. Israel said the attack killed three of its soldiers, injuring several others. The crossing is one of the few routes to get humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, into Gaza. In a statement, Hamas said the latest round had ended on Sunday and that its delegation would now travel from Cairo to Qatar to consult…
