New figures suggest food price inflation has slowed to its lowest level this year as prices of oils, fish, and breakfast cereals fall. According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NielsenIQ retail analysts, food inflation slowed to 13.4% in July. It was 14.6% in June. But overall, shop prices are still 7.6% higher this July than a year ago. BRC chief Helen Dickinson said the figures were “cause for optimism” but warned of supply chain issues ahead. Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative and targeting of grain facilities, as well as rice export restrictions from India, were…

Former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been pardoned in five of 19 charges brought against her by the military. The pardon, part of a seasonal amnesty, will reduce her 33-year jail sentence by six years. Former president Win Myint, who was ousted along with Ms Suu Kyi, also received a reduced jail sentence after getting two of his charged pardoned. Periodic amnesties have been announced before, but this is the first time they have included Ms Suu Kyi and Mr Myint. The military junta has made other concessions in what appears to be an effort to revive stalled…

The military juntas in Burkina Faso and Mali have said any forcible attempt to restore President Mohamed Bazoum in neighbouring Niger will be seen as a declaration of war on them. This follows a threat from a regional bloc that it would “take all measures” if the president was not reinstated. Mr Bazoum is being held by Niger’s coup leaders after being ousted last week. The region, threatened by an Islamist insurgency, has seen several coups in recent years. Both Burkina Faso and Mali have severed ties with the West, in particular with former colonial power France, and embraced new…

“The defenders were always mad at her,” Sissi recalls with a chuckle. “You were like: ‘How are we going to stop this girl?’” Out of the thousands of training sessions the former Brazil international took part in over the course of her 13-year career, there is one in particular that stands out. Back in 2000, when Sissi was playing with Rio de Janeiro-based club Vasco da Gama, the team’s Under-15 squad was called up to play in a training match against the seniors. Among them was a little forward by the name of Marta Viera da Silva, who nobody initially paid much…

Earlier this week Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X – another step in his plan to emulate Chinese mega app WeChat. Mr Musk has long said that he wants to transform his social media firm, which he bought last year for $44bn (£34.4bn), into a much larger platform. He has previously praised WeChat – a so-called “everything app” that combines chat, dating, payments and social media – and has said creating something “even close to that with Twitter… would be an immense success”. In a post on X this week, Mr Musk said that over the coming months, “we will…

China is due to start restricting exports of two materials key to the semiconductor industry, as the chip war with the US heats up. Under the new controls, special licences will be needed to export gallium and germanium from the world’s second largest economy. The materials are used to produce chips and have military applications. The curbs come after Washington made efforts to limit Beijing’s access to advanced microprocessor technology. China is by far the biggest player in the global supply chain of gallium and germanium. It produces 80% of the world’s gallium and 60% of germanium, according to the…

When “Elemental” opened to less than $30 million in the US in mid-June, box-office analysts and reporters were quick to label the animated movie a “flop,” one that was almost sure to lose money. Yet after steadily playing through the summer, the latest entry from one-time hit factory Pixar appears to have taken a page from the Little Mermaid – namely, by sprouting legs. The animated love story is bearing down on $150 million in the US, meaning it will have earned five times its opening-weekend total – a multiple no Pixar movie has achieved since the original “Toy Story.” The film, which features a love…
