Is India’s ambitious project to reintroduce cheetahs, more than 70 years after they were declared extinct, facing a crisis? Consider this. Twenty cheetahs were relocated from South Africa and Namibia to the 74,200-hectare Kuno national park in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in September last year and February. Since March, six of those cheetahs and three cubs born in the park have died. (The ninth cat died on Wednesday.) To be sure, cheetah experts say that losing half of the founder population in the initial year of relocation in unfenced parks is a common occurrence. There could be…
Japan’s finance ministry has called on X, formerly known as Twitter, to take down an account impersonating its top currency diplomat Masato Kanda. “Please don’t follow the impersonation account and/or comment on the post,” the ministry said in a rare post in English on the social media platform. Mr Kanda is a key figure in efforts by the world third largest economy to stabilise the value of the yen. The fake account now appears to have been suspended. X did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment. Mr Kanda is an influential voice amongst Japan’s monetary policy makers.…
Cardi B will not face charges related to throwing her microphone into the crowd at a concert in Las Vegas last weekend, according to police. “After a thorough review of this case and with the consultation from the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, this case has been closed as having insufficient evidence. No charges will be filed in relation to this case,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police told CNN in a statement on Thursday. “On behalf of Cardi, we appreciate the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept’s diligent and prompt resolution of this matter,” Drew Findling, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, the…
A 28-year-old man is accused of being at the centre of the deadly religious violence that broke out in the northern Indian state of Haryana earlier this week. Parts of Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon), a posh city on the borders of the capital, Delhi, and a few other districts saw pitched battles on the streets as shops and cars were set on fire. At least six people, including a Muslim cleric, were killed and dozens of others, including several policemen, were injured as mobs of Hindu and Muslim men clashed. Police said violence broke out on Monday afternoon in Nuh district…
India has placed restrictions on the import of computers and laptops in a surprise move from the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which has been trying to encourage domestic manufacturing in the tech sector. Importers will now need to apply for licenses in order to bring laptops, tablets, personal computers and other electronic devices into the country, according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday. Previously, the import of such items was unrestricted. The ministry didn’t provide a reason for the change in rules, however Modi has aggressively pushed his “Make in India” campaign, which…
Consumers are pulling back on discretionary spending, and Papa Johns is taking a hit. Sales at North American locations open at least a year fell 1% in the quarter ending on June 25, compared to the same period last year, dragged down by high prices at the chain’s franchise locations. “Some of the pricing … had gotten out in front of where the consumer was willing to spend,” said Papa Johns (PZZA) CEO Rob Lynch during a Thursday analyst call discussing the quarterly results. “April was the worst month that we’ve had since I’ve been at Papa Johns (PZZA),” in terms of sales at…
Explosions have been reported overnight near the Russian port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea. Footage shared on social media on Friday appeared to show loud blasts at the port, which is a major hub for Russian exports. Russia’s defence ministry said it had repelled a Ukrainian attack on its naval base there with two sea drones. It said the drones had been spotted and destroyed by Russian ships guarding the outer harbour of the naval base. The port temporarily suspended any movement of ships following the attack, according to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium which loads oil on to tankers…
Airbnb forecast third-quarter revenue above market estimates on Thursday, but industry fears of softening U.S. domestic demand sent the vacation rental firm’s shares down 1.2% in after-hours trading. The San Francisco-based company forecast quarterly revenue between $3.3 billion and $3.4 billion, ahead of analysts’ average estimate of $3.22 billion, according to Refinitiv data. The company expects to gain from a rebound in urban and international travel but firms with significant U.S. exposure are losing domestic business as more consumers opt for vacations abroad. Airbnb, which receives a majority of its revenue from outside the United States, said global cross-border bookings rose…
Apple sees sales slump continuing, shares drop 2% despite beating sales expectations
Apple on Thursday forecast that a sales slump would continue into the current quarter, sending shares down despite beating Wall Street sales and profit targets in the fiscal third quarter. Apple shares dropped about 2% after the company predicted what could be the fourth quarter in a row of declining sales. For the just-ended period, strength in services drove the profit beat, but weaker than expected sales of Apple’s most famous device, the iPhone, underwhelmed investors. Executives said iPhone sales would improve in the fourth quarter, but did not say how much. Apple is in a delicate position, with its entrenched…
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday decried “revolting” practices exposed during an audit of Ukraine’s military recruitment centres and pledged to fix the system by placing in charge people who understood the meaning of war. Zelenskiy has expressed indignation at corruption uncovered during the audit last month after a high-profile incident of wrongdoing came to light in the Black Sea port of Odesa. “We had a detailed conversation,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address after meeting Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and the head of the SBU security service, Vasyl Maliuk. “The investigation is revealing numerous abuses,” Zelenskiy said. “And they…
