Top model Bella Hadid has explained that her absence from key fashion events this year is likely to continue, saying in an emotional Instagram post on Sunday that she will return to the catwalk when “ready,” after seeking treatment for ongoing health problems. Alongside a series of pictures showing herself receiving what appear to be medical treatments, Hadid wrote: “Living in this state, worsening with time and work while trying to make myself, my family and the people who support me, proud, had taken a toll on me in ways I can’t really explain.” She added that she was “okay,” “finally healthy” and “wouldn’t change anything…
Niger military deploys reinforcements to capital after ignoring deadline to cede power
Niger’s armed forces have been bringing in reinforcements to the capital to prepare for a potential military intervention, a military source told CNN, just hours after the military junta running the country refused to abide by an influential regional bloc’s deadline to cede power. A convoy of about 40 pick-up trucks arrived at nightfall on Sunday evening, bringing troops from other parts of the country to both reassure a nervous public and prepare for potential battle. Niger has been engulfed in political chaos since late last month, when President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup d’etat by the presidential guard. The Economic Community…
Matty Healy: The 1975 threatened with legal action after Malaysia festival cancellation
The organisers of a festival in Malaysia cancelled last month after a controversial performance by the British band The 1975 have threatened the group with legal action. On Monday, the company behind the Good Vibes Festival sent the band a warning letter demanding compensation. The event was cancelled after the band’s singer Matt Healy attacked the country’s anti-LGBT laws. Representatives for the band refused to comment when contacted by the BBC. During the band’s headline performance, Healy addressed the audience in a profanity-laden speech before kissing a fellow band member. The event in Kuala Lumpur was cancelled the next day after a…
Mammoth operation to relocate troubled World Scout Jamboree in South Korea begins
South Korean authorities began a massive operation on Tuesday to relocate nearly 40,000 teenage scouts from around the world, after they were forced to change venues for a 12-day gathering that had become plagued with problems. The World Scout Jamboree, held on a giant makeshift campsite in Saemangeum on the country’s west coast, was supposed to feature outdoor activities, cultural performances, sustainability workshops and other offerings for the participants, mostly middle and high schoolers. But complaints about conditions in the camp, as well as an approaching typhoon and extreme heat – the latter of which sickened hundreds of teens – put a dampener…
Firefighters in Portugal are battling to contain wildfires engulfing thousands of hectares amid soaring temperatures. Around 800 personnel attended a fire near the southern town of Odemira overnight on Monday, with more than 1,400 people having to evacuate. At least nine firefighters have been injured tackling the fires. Temperatures in excess of 40C (104F) are expected to hit much of the Iberian peninsula this week. Three major fires that scorched hundreds of hectares in Spain over the weekend have been brought under control, but weather alerts remain in place across much of the country. In Portugal, Monday saw a temperature…
India’s parliament is set to debate a no-confidence motion that opposition parties have brought against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, who was reinstated as a lawmaker on Monday, will start the debate on behalf of the opposition. Lawmakers will vote on the motion on Thursday after the debate. Mr Modi’s government won’t lose the vote as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have a majority. But opposition leaders say the debate will force Mr Modi to speak on ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur state. The current parliament session, which began on 20 July, has…
Zoom, the video communications company whose name became synonymous with remote work during the pandemic, has ordered staff back to the office. The firm said it believed a “structured hybrid approach” was most effective and people living within 50 miles (80km) of an office should work in person at least twice a week. It is the latest push by a major firm to row back flexible working policies. Amazon and Disney are among the firms that have reduced remote work days. Surveys suggest that workers are still holding onto the ability to work from home to some degree. About 12%…
Vegan food firm Beyond Meat has seen its sales plunge by almost a third as the rising cost of living pushes shoppers to buy cheaper animal protein. The plant-based meat substitute maker says net revenues fell by 30.5% for the three months to the end of June, compared to a year earlier. Shares of the company fell by almost 12% in extended trading in New York. Last year, it announced plans to cut almost a fifth of its workforce to save around $39m (£30.6m) of costs. On Monday, the company said it had been affected by “softer demand in the plant-based meat…
This week, delegates arriving in Belém’s international airport are being welcomed with a lively “Boi de mascara” folkloric dance routine. In fact, the whole city is celebrating being in the spotlight, playing host to the Amazon Summit. It also feels like a bit of a warm-up for 2025 when the city hosts COP30. These two events are a big deal for this part of Brazil – a region that often feels forgotten. Belém’s well-placed too, as the capital of Pará, the state with the highest deforestation rate in Brazil. President Lula da Silva called this summit to bring together the…
A total of 98 people have been arrested in connection with child sex abuse, and 13 children rescued from harm, US and Australian authorities said Tuesday, more than two years after two FBI agents were killed investigating an alleged international pedophile ring. In a news conference Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Australian Federal Police (AFP) said 79 arrests, 65 indictments, and 43 convictions in the US were carried out as a result of the joint operation, while 19 men were arrested in Australia. Two FBI agents investigating the alleged ring were shot dead in 2021 while executing a…
