Cell phones are not allowed to be used while on a plane because they can interfere with the airplane’s navigation instruments and cause various safety and social issues. As soon as the plane lands, we’re permitted to turn off flight mode, but at some airports we can’t get much of a signal. That’s because airports are known as phone signal “dead zones” due to a lack of mobile towers – they can’t be placed at the airport itself due to height restrictions. Any nearby cell towers would be located away from the airport’s runway systems to avoid interfering with the airplane’s…
Amazon Clinic rolls out nationwide as e-commerce giant expands its health care footprint
Amazon’s virtual clinic is now available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., the company announced on Tuesday. Amazon Clinic launched last November and offers customers 24/7 access to third-party health-care providers directly on Amazon’s website and mobile app. With the service, Amazon customers can receive telehealth treatment for dozens of common conditions, such as pink eye, urinary tract infections and hair loss. The company said on Tuesday that in addition to message-based consultations being available in 34 states, Amazon Clinic now supports video visits nationwide. Amazon Clinic currently does not accept insurance, but medication prescribed by clinicians may be covered by…
Thousands of people in Maui are without cell service as the wildfires continue to rage out of control on the island, preventing people from calling emergency services or updating loved ones about their status. It could take days or even weeks to get the networks back up and running. “911 is down. Cell service is down. Phone service is down,” Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke told CNN on Wednesday morning. Although strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. Fire, however, complicates the issue. “When the fires get too close to…
Justice Kagan order: Apple doesn’t have to change app store terms while battling Epic in court
A judicial order forcing Apple to change some of its app store terms will not need to take immediate effect while litigation over the decision plays out, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan said on Wednesday, handing a temporary defeat to opponents of the company. The order is a setback for “Fortnite”-maker Epic Games as Apple appeals a lower-court ruling that found the iPhone-maker had violated California competition law. Epic Games declined to comment on Kagan’s decision, which occurred in the Supreme Court’s so-called “shadow docket” and was not referred to the full court. Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request…
The Walt Disney Company is hiking prices for its Disney+ streaming service again, as its third-quarter earnings report showed revenue struggles almost everywhere but international parks. The streaming service’s ad-free subscription will cost $13.99 beginning October 12, an increase of $3 per month. This is the second time in less than a year Disney raised the price of its streaming offering; in December, the company upped the price of its ad-free tier to $10.99 from $7.99. Disney owns a majority stake in Hulu, which will also see prices go up in October: its ad-free offering will rise $3 to $17.99. An new…
One year after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade – a landmark ruling on abortion rights – some IVF patients are worried that potential new laws could jeopardise their fertility treatment. Some women are even considering moving their frozen embryos across state lines. Julie Eshelman has had a long and difficult journey trying to build her family. “My husband and I were married in 2015,” she tells me. “We naively decided that we wanted to wait a year before we started having kids. In 2016, we started trying and after six months, I was like: ‘This isn’t working,…
The NHS, it is claimed, is facing an exodus of doctors. It is one of the reasons put forward to support their claims for more pay as strike action continues. But an analysis of data by the BBC suggests this is not the case – yet. The proportion of the medical workforce leaving the NHS has hardly changed for a decade, while figures on those seeking a move overseas do not, overall, show a clear upwards trend. There are, however, some worrying signs – with increasing numbers of junior doctors taking a break in their training, and some evidence that…
A indigenous couple at the centre of an Oscar-winning Indian film has sued its makers, alleging mistreatment. Elephant Whisperers tells the story of Bomman and Bellie as they care for an orphaned and injured baby elephant inside the Mudumulai Tiger Reserve in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Netflix film made history at the Oscars by becoming the first Indian production to win in the Best Documentary Short Film category earlier this year. And it turned the caretakers, Bomman and Bellie, into overnight sensations. After the film’s success, they were felicitated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who presented…
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has fired his top general amid a shakeup of the country’s military leadership and wants his army to “gird for a war,” state media reported Thursday. Gen. Pak Su Il was dismissed as chief of the General Staff and Vice Marshal Ri Yong Gil was appointed in his place, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Other “leading commanding officers” were dismissed, transferred or appointed during a meeting of the Central Military Commission on Wednesday, KCNA reported, without going into details. North Korea regularly revamps its military leadership. Some military leaders later reemerge in different positions,…
A rocket plane is due to fly from New Mexico carrying an 80-year-old British former Olympian, an Aberdeen student and her mother into space. Anastatia Mayers and her mother Keisha Schahaff won the tickets to board the Virgin Galactic flight in a competition. Jon Goodwin, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, will become the second person with Parkinson’s disease to go to space. The mission will be seen as another test of how viable space tourism is. The launch window for the Virgin Galactic 02 flight opens at 08:30 local time (15:30BST). It is Virgin Galactic’s second commercial flight. The first was in June…
