Jason Momoa has warned tourists not to travel to Maui as the island struggles to recover from devastating wildfires. The native Hawaiian and Aquaman actor wrote on Instagram: “Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. “Do not travel,” he said. “Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply.” More than 90 people are confirmed dead in fires that destroyed towns including historic Lahaina. Momoa also shared a video in which he said that the Hawaiian community “needs time to heal, grieve and restore”. “That means the less…
Mattias Åström glances out of the office window in France. “Look at all the beautiful roads and bridges here,” says the founder and chief executive of Evroc. “You can see what we built hundreds of years ago. Now, we’re letting foreign companies build our critical infrastructure.” He’s talking about digital infrastructure: the hardware and software, data centres and communications networks that power modern business. There’s growing concern in Europe about digital sovereignty, the region’s ability to control its own data and technology. For example, Europe is heavily dependent on US firms for cloud services – the remote computing and data…
Amazon has started releasing some sellers’ funds back to them after many UK and EU sellers complained of money being held unexpectedly. The change in policy comes after the BBC reported Amazon’s actions led some businesses being close to collapse. Amazon told some sellers it will now delay the temporary holds on money until January 2024. But one ink seller, Daniel Moore, who had £230,000 frozen, said Amazon were only “delaying our anguish”. Amazon wrote in an email to one seller in the early hours of Saturday: “We understand that the transition to this policy on 3 August has caused…
India’s Tata Group has unveiled a new logo, branding and livery for Air India as part of a multi-million dollar transformation of the former national carrier. The logo includes a design with golden, red and purple colours, and will replace the old one of a red swan. The rebranding exercise comes years after Tata Group bought the debt-ridden airline in October 2021. The airline was officially handed over in January 2022. CEO Campbell Wilson said the company will not completely do away with the airline’s iconic mascot of a cheerful Maharaja, which has been one of India’s most recognisable symbols.…
Amazon staff in the US received a warning email from the firm for not spending enough time in the office after their attendance was tracked. Some employees were told they were “not currently meeting our expectation of joining your colleagues in the office at least three days a week.” Amazon is not the first tech giant to depart from flexible working rules ushered in during the pandemic. Disney has already done so and this week Zoom ordered staff to the office. Amazon’s office attendance mandate for American employees took effect in May and stipulates that they have to “badge in” to the…
Russia has successfully launched Luna 25, the country’s first lunar lander in 47 years. The uncrewed spacecraft lifted off from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Amur Oblast, Russia. Hitching a ride aboard a Soyuz-2 Fregat rocket, Luna 25 took flight at 8:10 a.m. local time Friday, or 7:10 p.m. ET Thursday. Residents of a Russian village were temporarily evacuated Friday morning since there is a “one in a million chance” that one of Luna 25’s rocket stages could fall there, according to Reuters. The spacecraft is expected to first enter an orbit around Earth before transferring to a lunar orbit and ultimately…
Eating disorders run rampant on university campuses. How to protect your college-bound kid
If you’re sending a kid off to college, it makes sense to experience a mixture of excitement and worry — about their leaving home, sleeping enough and making friends but also the mental health crisis on many college campuses. But I find most parents and guardians aren’t aware that this crisis includes eating disorders — which are serious, life-threatening mental illnesses characterized by a disturbance in one’s relationship with food, exercise and/or body size. The transition to college is a time when students are especially vulnerable to developing an eating disorder, and today’s students are at greater risk than ever, according to a November 2022…
More people died from suicide in the United States last year than any other year on record, according to provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least 49,449 lives were lost due to intentional self-harm in 2022 — nearly 15 deaths for every 100,000 people. The suicide rate spiked in 2021, reversing two years of decline. And with the continued increase in 2022, rates surpassed the previous record from 2018. Last year’s suicide rate — 14.9 deaths for every 100,000 people — is 5% higher than 2018’s previous record high of 14.2 deaths for every 100,000 people…
Following news stories in the past few days, it’s understandable you might be concerned about your data. The UK’s elections watchdog revealed on Tuesday it had been the victim of a “complex cyber-attack” potentially affecting millions of voters. It also emerged personal details of police officers in Northern Ireland were published accidentally. But what can you do if you are concerned your data may have been leaked, and how can you prevent issues? How safe is my data? Generally, when public organisations such as the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) respond to Freedom of Information requests they should remove…
It was difficult to maintain a poker face when the leader of a big US tech firm I was chatting to said there was a definite tipping point at which the firm would exit the UK. I could see my own surprise mirrored on the faces of the other people in the room – many of whom worked there. They hadn’t heard this before either, one told me afterwards. I can’t tell you who it was but it’s a brand you would probably recognise. I’ve been doing this job for long enough to recognise a petulant tech ego when I…
