Medieval girl buried face down, ankles possibly tied, to prevent ‘return’ from the grave
Analysis of the remains of a young Medieval girl, who was buried face down with her ankles potentially tied together, suggests extra measures were taken to ensure “she could not ‘return’ from the grave,” archaeologists have said. The corpse of the 15-year-old was found in a pit at an Early Medieval settlement near the southeastern English village of Conington in the county of Cambridgeshire, according to the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA). The excavation took place between 2016 and 2018 and the girl’s remains have now been studied. While Early Medieval England did not have set burial traditions, it was common practice…
Police in Paris have arrested a man for jumping off the Eiffel Tower with a parachute on Thursday, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV. A man scaled a pillar of the iconic landmark early morning local time, BFMTV reported, citing police sources. The tower’s management company, SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel) said the man was detected in “less than a minute” by security after entering the site. Attempts by the tower’s intervention brigade to deter him proved unsuccessful and he went ahead with his jump from the attraction. He landed on the roof of a nearby sports center before being arrested…
Maui’s emergency management chief has quit a day after defending his agency’s failure to activate its alarm system in last week’s fatal wildfire. Herman Andaya, who had no prior experience in emergency management, cited “health reasons” for resigning. In the days since, residents of the Hawaii island have told the BBC a stronger emergency response could have saved more lives. At least 111 people have been declared dead. Hundreds are still missing. Maui’s sophisticated system, which includes 80 sirens around the island, is tested on the first of every month, its 60-second tone a normal part of life in Lahaina.…

S**t happens.” He added, “Asking for privacy seems rediculous (sic) so i will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.” The actor…
China’s Evergrande Group — once the country’s second-largest property developer — filed for bankruptcy in New York on Thursday. The beleaguered firm borrowed heavily and defaulted on its debt in 2021, sparking a massive property crisis in China’s economy, which continues to feel the effects. Evergrande filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection, which allows a US bankruptcy court to step in when an insolvency case involves another country. Chapter 15 bankruptcy is intended to help promote cooperation between US courts, debtors, and other countries’ courts involved in cross-border bankruptcy proceedings. Evergrande did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. The impact…

More than 200 captive-bred water voles have been released at a secret location close to Haweswater, as part of an attempt to create a thriving population of the endangered species in Cumbria. Conservationists and volunteers carried the semi-aquatic mammals to their new home in temporary soft-release pens, to allow them a few days to acclimatise. Although, 10 of the older ones were freed directly into the water. Nearly wiped out in recent decades, the species was widespread across the UK. This reintroduction is the first in the Lake District. Volunteers will check the pens in the coming days, eventually removing…
Irish musician Hozier has said he would consider striking over the threat artificial intelligence (AI) poses to his industry. Hollywood actors and writers are currently striking over a row about better contracts and protection from the use of AI. Hozier told the BBC’s Newsnight he would be willing to join similar strike action in the music industry. The singer added he was not sure if AI “meets the definition of art”. In July, Hollywood writers and actors manned picket lines for the first time in decades. Among their concerns was a proposal by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to…
Amazon has been accused of sexism after its Alexa voice assistant was unable to respond to a question about the Lionesses’ semi-final victory at the Women’s World Cup. When asked on Wednesday “for the result of the England-Australia football match today” it said there was no match. “This was an error that has been fixed,” an Amazon spokesperson said. Academic Joanne Rodda – who alerted the BBC – said it showed “sexism in football was embedded in Alexa”. Dr Rodda, a senior lecturer in psychiatry at Kent and Medway Medical School – with an interest in artificial intelligence (AI), said she had…
