Spreading its wings two months after “The Flash” ran into a brick wall at the box office, “Blue Beetle” is the latest movie to test the theory that life’s tough for DC heroes not named Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman. The main challenge facing this young Latinx superhero is TV, and the sense this origin story would have been more at home on a venue like Disney+ (rival Marvel’s playground) or the CW. As is, the defining element becomes the extent to which the story heavily relies on its family component, which provides emotional ballast at first but becomes increasingly…
Ukrainian marines have advanced for the second time in two weeks on the southeastern frontlines, towards the key port city of Mariupol, with the recapture of the village of Urozhaine appearing to have been partially aided by the Ukrainian use of controversial cluster munitions. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar confirmed the village’s liberation Wednesday morning, as a CNN crew approached its outskirts with the 35th Marines. Heavy artillery fire prevented entry into the village, as Russian forces shelled Ukrainian troops holding the area. Drone footage of the intense fight for the village has emerged in which dozens of Russian troops can be…
Father Ted writer Graham Linehan has appeared at a comedy show outside the Scottish Parliament, after it was cancelled twice by Edinburgh venues. Comedy Unleashed moved the gig to Holyrood on Thursday when a second venue declined to host the show. The original venue, Leith Arches, had pulled out amid concern about Mr Linehan’s views on transgender issues. Mr Linehan has threatened legal action if the venue refuses to reverse its decision and apologise. The cancellation of the show had sparked a wider debate on freedom of speech. A small temporary stage was erected near the main entrance to the…
Officials in the US state of Georgia are investigating online threats made against members of the grand jury that indicted Donald Trump on Monday. Personal information, including the addresses and photos of the jurors, were shared on right-wing platforms. Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said it was aware of the threats, and was trying to track down those behind them. The names of the jurors were published in the indictment, a routine practice in Georgia. But after their identities emerged in that document, supporters of former President Trump seemingly compiled further information available online and posted photographs and addresses to forums,…
Russian officials have accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on a building in Moscow, causing an explosion that was heard across the city’s business district. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences had shot down the drone with its debris falling on the city’s Expo Center. It marks the latest in a series of such attacks on the Russian capital. Unverified footage on social media appeared to show thick grey smoke rising into the night sky over Moscow. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, but officials in Kyiv have never formally acknowledged launching attacks on targets in Moscow. The…
Ben Stokes made the decision to reverse his one-day international retirement “a week or 10 days after the Ashes”, says England white-ball captain Jos Buttler. The 32-year-old retired from ODIs last summer but has made himself available for England’s World Cup defence, which gets under way in India on 5 October. “I just left it to him to come to me if he wanted to come back,” said Buttler. “Any time a player of his quality is available again is fantastic. We’re delighted to welcome him back.” All-rounder Stokes has been named in England’s squad for the four-match one-day series…
How a former Navy SEAL helped Lucas Glover overcome 10 years of the yips and become golf’s most in-form player
The yips: two words that strike fear into the hearts of every golfer. For Lucas Glover, it was a terror that tormented him for years. An involuntary muscle tension in the wrist, the yips are not exclusive to golf, but the term – popularized by legendary Scotsman Tommy Armour in the 1920s – has become synonymous with a spasm that can cripple the swing of even the game’s biggest stars. Ernie Els, Danielle Kang, Bernhard Langer and Georgia Hall are just four major winners who have battled the yips – also referred to as “the staggers” or “whiskey fingers” – which is primarily associated…
Stefanos Tsitsipas complains about ‘a person imitating a bee’ during Western & Southern Open match
The atmosphere was buzzing for Stefanos Tsitsipas’ second-round match at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati – though more in an annoying way for the Greek tennis star. Tsitsipas said that he was antagonized by a “person imitating a bee” in the seats behind him during his match against American Ben Shelton on Wednesday. “It’s a buzz right before I serve,” Tsitsipas told the umpire after abandoning a serve mid-action. The world No. 4 then went to have a word with the spectator himself before returning to speak with the umpire. “It’s never happened in my career,” he said. “I know they’re supporting the…
A potentially myth-busting outtake photo from The Beatles Sgt Pepper’s cover shoot is set to fetch thousands when it goes up for auction later. Considered one of the most famous album covers of all time, there has long been speculation Sir Paul McCartney was not actually at the shoot. But a previously unseen photo of the band member will put the myth to bed, auctioneer Martin Hughes said. The photo is part of a press pack up for sale at a Wiltshire auction house. It is expected to fetch between £5,000 to £7,000 at Wessex Auction Rooms, although Mr Hughes…
