Online fast fashion firm Shein is planning to file paperwork for a potential London share listing as soon as this week, according to reports. An initial public offering (IPO) could value the company at around $66bn (£51.7bn). The firm, which was founded in China and now headquartered in Singapore, stepped up preparations for a share sale in the UK after it faced regulatory hurdles and intense scrutiny in the US. A Shein spokesperson declined to comment. Shein has in the past been linked to unethical business practices, including forced labour allegations. A confidential filing with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority…
Frontrunner Claudia Sheinbaum is set to become Mexico’s first woman president in an historic win, exit polls suggest. Pollsters predicted that the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City had won 56% of the vote in Sunday’s election, convincingly beating her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez. Ms Sheinbaum’s Morena party has already claimed victory – but Ms Gálvez urged her supporters to wait for the official results, expected to be announced early on Monday. Voters were also electing all members of Mexico’s Congress and governors in eight states, as well as the head of Mexico City’s government, in the campaign marred…
Donald Trump has said his historic trial and criminal conviction have been “very hard” for his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump. Last week, jurors found Mr Trump guilty of falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments made to former porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election campaign. With the verdict, he became the first US president to be convicted of a crime. He has repeatedly called the trial rigged and politically motivated. In an interview with Fox News over the weekend, Mr Trump vowed that success at the upcoming November US election would be his “revenge”. He…
Flooding and landslides caused by monsoon rains in Sri Lanka have killed at least seven people, the country’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has said. In Sitawaka – outside the capital, Colombo – three members of the same family died when their house was flooded. Supplies of electricity have been cut off in several areas and schools ordered to remain shut on Monday. Landslide warnings have been issued in nine districts. DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili told the BBC’s Sinhala service that the risk of flooding was rapidly increasing in Colombo and other areas of the south. “Many areas have reportedly received…
The US has “every expectation” Israel will accept a ceasefire proposal that would begin with a six-week cessation of hostilities in Gaza if Hamas takes the deal, a senior White House official has said. The three-part plan unveiled by President Joe Biden last week would also see a “surge” of humanitarian aid, as well as an exchange of some hostages for Palestinian prisoners before a permanent end to the war. The proposal, however, has met with vocal opposition from some members of Israel’s government. The negotiations come as fighting continues in Rafah, which came under intense Israeli airstrikes over the…
WeWork is set to emerge from bankruptcy, hoping that less debt and fewer offices will give it a new lease of life. The company which rents out shared office workspaces, founded in 2010 and once hailed as the future of the office, racked up losses during an aggressive global expansion. It filed for bankruptcy last year, reeling from the sharp drop in demand for office space sparked by the pandemic. The company has since used court protection to renegotiate the terms of its rental leases and work with its lenders. WeWork has said it plans to operate 337 shared office…

Doctolib is one of the French start-up scene’s great success stories. Founded in 2013 by Stanislas Niox-Chateau and his three co-founders, the software firm assists healthcare providers with administrative tasks, primarily appointment booking and management. Rather than having to contact practices directly, patients can use Doctolib to check availability and book medical appointments online. In a world where we book everything online, this might seem like a simple innovation, but in the slow, data-sensitive, bureaucratic healthcare industry, any software that can reliably simplify complexity and free up time is a welcome change. Doctolib is free for patients. Medical doctors pay…
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is on course to lose its majority in parliament for the first time since it came to power 30 years ago, partial results from Thursday’s parliamentary election suggest. With results from more than 50% of voting districts counted so far, the ANC is leading with 42%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 23%. The the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) of former President Jacob Zuma has received nearly 11% of the vote and the Economic Freedom Fighters party, nearly 10%. Final results are expected over the weekend. Many voters blame…
As Claudia Sheinbaum, the front-runner in Mexico’s presidential election, arrives for a rally in a packed park in the colonial city of Orizaba, the crowd starts to chant “Presidenta!” Those attending are convinced that is what she is about to become: Mexico’s first ever woman president. The polls suggest they may well be right. With her closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, also a woman, and the only man in the presidential race a distant third, Mexico is almost certain to set to break centuries of male domination of the country’s highest office. In fluent English, Ms Sheinbaum, who belongs to the…
