In a world first, scientists say that an 8cm worm has been found alive in the brain of an Australian woman. The “string-like structure” was pulled from the England-born patient’s damaged frontal lobe tissue during surgery in Canberra last year. The red parasite could have been there for up to two months. Researchers are warning that the case highlights the increased danger of diseases and infections being passed from animals to people. “Everyone [in] that operating theatre got the shock of their life when [the surgeon] took some forceps to pick up an abnormality and the abnormality turned out to…
Workers at two large liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants in Australia, operated by US energy giant Chevron, are set to go on strike from 7 September, in a move that could drive up global prices. This follows weeks of negotiations with unions over pay and working conditions. Chevron told the BBC it would “continue to take steps to maintain safe and reliable operations in the event of disruption at our facilities”. The Wheatstone and Gorgon sites produce more than 5% of the world’s LNG. Fears of strikes recently pushed up wholesale gas prices in Europe. Around 500 workers are currently…
Shares of Rite Aid ended Monday’s session higher after a day of highly volatile trading. The Philadelphia-based chain sank 51% on Friday setting a new all-time low of…
Taking on three of the most remote and rugged long-distance trails of America would be a challenge for any hiker. But attempting to hike them with several young children in tow – well that’s a completely different ball game. However, after completing both the Appalachian Trail, which stretches over nearly 2,200 miles (3,540 kilometers) between Georgia and Maine, and the Continental Divide Trail, a 3,028-mile (4,873-kilometer) trail extending from New Mexico to the Canadian border in Montana, the Netteburgs are well on their way to doing just that. Made up of Danae and Olen Netteburg, both 44, and their five…
Former US Swimmer’s Death In The US Virgin Islands Caused By Accidental Fentanyl Intoxication, Autopsy Says
The death earlier this year of former US swimming champion Jamie Cail has been ruled accidental and fentanyl related, according to a Facebook post from the US Virgin Islands Police Department. An autopsy report from the US Virgin Islands Office of the Medical Examiner listed Cail’s cause of death as “fentanyl intoxication with aspiration of gastric content,” police said Friday. Cail, 42, died in February on the island of St. John. Police said at the time that her boyfriend, who has not been identified, left a bar just after midnight to check on her and found her on the floor of their home. The…
Climate Change Has Ravaged India’s Rice Stock. Now Its Export Ban Could Deepen a Global Food Crisis
Satish Kumar sits in front of his submerged rice paddy in India’s Haryana state, looking despairingly at his ruined crops. “I’ve suffered a tremendous loss,” said the third generation farmer, who relies solely on growing the grain to feed his young family. “I will not be able to grow anything until November.” The newly planted saplings have been underwater since July after torrential rain battered northern India, with landslides and flash floods sweeping through the region. Kumar said he has not seen floods of this scale in years and has been forced to take loans to replant his fields all…
Gut problems including constipation, difficulty swallowing and an irritable bowel may be an early warning sign of Parkinson’s disease in some people, a new study suggests. The findings in the journal Gut add more evidence to the idea that brain and bowel health are intimately linked. Understanding why gut issues happen might allow earlier treatment of Parkinson’s, say the researchers. Parkinson’s is progressive, meaning the brain disorder gets worse over time. What is Parkinson’s? People with Parkinson’s do not have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it are damaged. This causes…

About 2,000 treasures are thought to have been stolen from the British Museum, but recovery has begun of some of them, chairman George Osborne has said. The ex-chancellor accepted the museum’s reputation has suffered but said “it is a mess we are going to clear up”. A leading expert in looted antiquities told the BBC the number of objects lost from the museum was “mind-blowing”. A staff member the museum suspects of involvement has been sacked. And it was announced on Friday that Hartwig Fischer, the museum’s director, will step down immediately after accepting a 2021 investigation was mishandled. The…
Hannah Montana star Mitchel Musso has been arrested on suspicion of theft and public intoxication after allegedly stealing a packet of crisps. The actor played Oliver Oken in the Disney sitcom, starring alongside Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus. Police were called on Saturday to a hotel in Rockwell, Texas where the 32-year-old was alleged to have stolen the crisps, NBC reported. BBC News has asked representatives for Musso for comment. When asked to pay for the crisps, Musso allegedly refused and became verbally abusive. Police ran a background check on Musso, which reportedly found the actor had several outstanding traffic…
