Newspaper chain Gannett has paused the use of an artificial intelligence tool to write high school sports dispatches after the technology made several major flubs in articles in at least one of its papers. Several high school sports reports written by an AI service called LedeAI and published by the Columbus Dispatch earlier this month went viral on social media this week — and not in a good way. In one notable example, preserved by the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the story began: “The Worthington Christian [[WINNING_TEAM_MASCOT]] defeated the Westerville North [[LOSING_TEAM_MASCOT]] 2-1 in an Ohio boys soccer game on Saturday.” The page…
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees to get on board with the company’s return-to-office plan or to consider employment elsewhere, the company confirmed to CNN, after a report by Insider highlighted Jassy’s remarks from a recent internal event. Jassy’s message reflects Amazon’s continued pressure on US office staff to comply with a policy requiring them to report to a physical office at least three days a week. As part of his remarks, which Amazon shared with CNN, Jassy said during the event this month that while employees are entitled to disagree with the company’s decision bringing workers back into the office and…
US TV’s late-night talk show rivals, who have been off air for four months during the Hollywood strike, have joined forces to host a new podcast to raise money for their writers and crew. Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver and Stephen Colbert, have dubbed themselves Strike Force Five for the Spotify series. They were among the first to go off air when writers went on strike in May. They then began having private weekly discussions about the situation. Those conversations, described by Spotify as “hilarious and compelling”, spawned the idea for a podcast. The all-star line-up will take it…
Think of Netflix and a memorable television show or movie will likely pop into your mind. What did you most enjoy? Squid Game? Bridgerton? Stranger Things maybe? Soon, the streaming service wants video games to be competing for a place on that list. Netflix says games are a key part of its proposition to stay relevant with audiences in years to come, and is slowly ramping up plans to offer more gaming experiences to subscribers. Leanne Loombe, vice president of external games at Netflix, tells BBC News: “Games are one of the biggest forms of entertainment out there today, so…
North Korea says it has fired two short-range ballistic missiles to simulate nuclear strikes on military targets in South Korea. State media said the tests were held as a warning against the US deployment of strategic bombers to the region. South Korean media reported the missiles were fired off the east coast around midnight. The launches come amid Washington and Seoul’s annual military drills- which always provoke the North. Pyongyang has long denounced the combined drills as the US’ rehearsal for war. North Korea’s army said the missiles had been fired late on Wednesday in a “tactical nuclear strike drill…
The US Department of Health and Human Services has called on the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to loosen federal rules on cannabis. The drug is illegal at the federal level despite 40 of 50 US states having passed laws legalising its use in some form. Cannabis is currently listed in the same class of drugs as heroin and LSD. If the DEA changes its classification, it could mark the most significant shift in US drug policy in decades. Cannabis is currently classified as a schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it has no medical use and a…
Over-The-Counter Opioid Overdose Antidote Narcan To Hit Shelves Next Week, Drugmaker Says
The first over-the-counter naloxone, a drug used to reverse opioid overdose, will be available in retail stores and online as soon as next week, its manufacturer said Wednesday. The medicine, with the brand name Narcan, will have a suggested retail price of $44.99 per carton of two doses, maker Emergent BioSolutions said in a news release. It will be available initially in stores and online from retailers including Walgreens, Rite Aid, Walmart and CVS. The US Food and Drug Administration approved Narcan as an over-the-counter drug in March against a backdrop of record high deaths from opioid overdose, driven by powerful synthetic drugs like…
Erratic climate conditions – including the driest August in more than a century – have sent food prices spiralling above 11% in India, which is a major player in global agri-trade. Just as tomato prices begin cooling down, onions have gotten dearer by a quarter since June in the domestic market. And pulses which go into making the humble dal (lentil soup) are now around 20% more expensive than at the beginning of the year. India’s got a “curry problem”, some economists say, as the cost of a regular vegetarian meal jumped by a third in the month of July alone.…
In an effort to help prevent the spread of misinformation, Google on Tuesday unveiled an invisible, permanent watermark on images that will identify them as computer-generated. The technology, called SynthID, embeds the watermark directly into images created by Imagen, one of Google’s latest text-to-image generators. The AI-generated label remains regardless of modifications like added filters or altered colors. The SynthID tool can also scan incoming images and identify the likelihood they were made by Imagen by scanning for the watermark with three levels of certainty: detected, not detected and possibly detected. “While this technology isn’t perfect, our internal testing shows…
Country Garden, one of China’s biggest property developers, has become the latest real estate giant to warn that it could default on its debts. This came as the crisis-hit company reported a record $6.7bn (£5.2bn) loss for the first six months of the year. Country Garden said in the statement that it was “deeply remorseful for the unsatisfactory performance.” The announcement adds to concerns about the post-pandemic recovery of the world’s second largest economy. Country Garden also announced it had missed interest payments on bonds that were due this month. However, it added it was still within a 30-day grace…
