August began with a bright supermoon and will end the same way as another one lights up the night sky this week. The ringed planet Saturn will also make its closest and brightest appearance of the year near the moon. The full moon will peak at 9:36 p.m. ET on the evening of August 30, but will appear full through Friday morning, according to NASA. At the end of evening twilight on Wednesday, around 8:42 p.m. ET, the bright glow of Saturn will appear about 5 degrees to the upper right of the moon. Over the course of the evening, Saturn…
A Saudi court has sentenced a retired teacher to death over his comments online, say his brother and advocacy group Human Rights Watch. Muhammad al-Ghamdi, a 54-year-old retired Saudi teacher, was sentenced “following 5 tweets criticizing corruption and human rights violations,” his brother Saeed bin Nasser al-Ghamdi tweeted last week. According to Human Rights Watch, Muhammad al-Ghamdi was arrested last year and given little access to a lawyer before his conviction in July “under article 30 of Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism law for ‘describing the King or the Crown Prince in a way that undermines religion or justice,’ article 34 for…
Blood clots in the brain or the lungs might explain some common symptoms of “long Covid”, including brain fog and fatigue, a UK study suggests. In the study, of 1,837 people admitted to hospital because of Covid, researchers say two blood proteins point to clots being one cause. It is thought 16% of such patients have trouble thinking, concentrating or remembering for at least six months. Long Covid can also develop after milder infections. But the research team, from the universities of Oxford and Leicester, stress: Identifying predictors and possible mechanisms was “a key step” in understanding post-Covid brain fog,…
More than 100 schools in England are scrambling to make arrangements after being told to shut buildings with a type of concrete prone to collapse. The government gave the order just days before the start of the autumn term. Some pupils have already been told they will be learning remotely, in temporary classrooms or at different schools. The government has not said when a list of affected schools will be published, drawing criticism from the Labour Party. Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson, who said Labour had not seen the full list, urged ministers to “come clean with parents and set…
Murder, Torture, Sexual Violence Among Thousands Of Russian Crimes Against Children, Ukraine Says
Ukraine has opened more than 3,000 criminal cases over Russia’s alleged crimes against children in the country, including dozens of torture cases, Ukrainian prosecutors said Thursday. The allegations include “murders, mutilations, abduction of children, forced displacement, deportation, sexual violence against children and kidnapping,” Yulia Usenko, head of the Department for the Protection of Children’s Interests and Combating Violence of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, told Interfax-Ukraine. UK defence giant BAE Systems has set up a legal entity in Ukraine and signed deals to help ramp up supplies of weapons and equipment to Kyiv. The firm said the move will allow it to work directly with Ukraine to explore potential partners and ultimately produce light artillery there. BAE has made much of the arms the UK and other nations have sent to Ukraine. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Britain has become a major defence supplier to Ukraine. The BBC understands that BAE has no current plans to open a physical office or a factory in…

When Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui heads to the International Space Station (ISS) next year, he will have two new skincare items in his bag that are especially designed for the rigors of space travel. The face wash and lotion are part of a “Cosmology” line unveiled on Monday by Japanese cosmetic company POLA and ANA Holdings, the parent company of All Nippon Airways. The products were created after the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) called for skincare solutions that could be used in the resource-scarce, low-gravity and extremely dry conditions of outer space. The two companies began working on the range…
Advertising Is Missing Black women. This Photographer Is On a Quest To Change That, Both In Front Of And Behind The Lens
Whether she’s shooting an advertising campaign for Nike or a photo spread for Vogue, photographer Bassie Maluleka’s images will likely have a common theme. That’s by design. By highlighting Black women, she seeks to bring an often-underrepresented demographic to the forefront. “I feel like Black people are always shown in light of struggle, and just everyday suffering,” Maluleka said during a recent video interview. “And I just want to change the narrative in that way – I want to shine a light on the stories that we can tell, like the beautiful side of being a Black woman.” Coming from…
