A device “the size of a dinner plate” was left in the abdomen of a woman in New Zealand after she gave birth via a Caesarean in an Auckland hospital. The Alexis wound retractor – a soft tubal instrument used to hold open surgical wounds – was only removed 18 months after her delivery. During this time, the woman endured severe pains and made several doctor trips before it was found on a CT scan. Health regulators said the public hospital system had failed the patient. Initially, district health authorities Te Whatu Ora Auckland had argued that they had not…
A photo posted online appears to show a Russian general who has not been seen in public since a mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group in June. Sergei Surovikin is said to have been close to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash last month. There have been reports that Gen Surovikin is being investigated for possible complicity in the mutiny. But a photo purporting to show Russia’s former commander in Ukraine has now been published on social media. “General Sergei Surovikin is out. Alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow. Photo taken today,” well-known…
The maker of weight-loss drug Wegovy has become Europe’s most valuable firm, dethroning the French luxury conglomerate LVMH. Shares rose after the Danish pharmaceutical giant, Novo Nordisk, launched the popular drug in the UK. At the close of trading on Monday, the firm had a stock market valuation of $428bn (£339bn). The drug is now available on the National Health Service in the UK and also on the private market. Wegovy is an obesity treatment that is taken once a week which tricks people into thinking that they are already full, so they end up eating less and losing weight. Famous…
South Korean Teachers Hold Mass Protests After Suicide Highlights Pressures From Parents
Hundreds of thousands of teachers are protesting in South Korea after the suspected suicide of a teacher that was widely blamed on the burden on educators in a country notorious for its high-pressure education system. Angry teachers say they face overly harsh demands and even harassment from aggrieved parents, and are calling for legal reform and greater protections. Up to 200,000 protesters participated in a rally on Saturday, according to the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations, citing event organizers. And on Monday, an estimated 50,000 teachers stopped work and gathered in the capital to commemorate the deceased teacher, according to organizers – despite…
Jim Abbott was used to dealing with uncomfortable social situations; in some ways, they were all he’d ever known. As a child who’d been born without a right hand, he had quickly learned that he looked different, but no matter how hard he tried to hide it, everyone knew. “I felt the teasing and the bullying of the playground,” he told CNN Sport. “I keenly felt the awkward second glances in the school hallways and classrooms.” He learned to survive and then thrive, but many years later, shortly before his 26th birthday, things were suddenly awkward again. Now, he was sitting…
Steve Harwell, the founding lead singer of the rock group Smash Mouth, died Monday, according to his manager. He was 56. No cause of death was shared, but Harwell had been receiving hospice care over the weekend. He died at his home in Boise, Idaho, with family and friends by his side, according Robert Hayes, the manager of Smash Mouth. “Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle,” Hayes said in a statement to CNN. “Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach…
Carson Daly Reflects On Early Days Of Smash Mouth’s Success In Moving Tribute To Steve Harwell
Carson Daly is remembering his friend Steve Harwell, the co-founder and former lead singer of the rock band Smash Mouth, who died Monday at age 56. The “Today Show” anchor and former MTV VJ rose to fame during the same era that Harwell’s Smash Mouth did, and Daly took time to reflect on how often their paths crossed early in their careers. Daly posted a tribute to Harwell on Monday on Instagram, writing he went “down the rabbit hole of 90s music memories” after hearing the news of Harwell’s death. “I met Steve & the band in 1995 when I was a DJ on KOME…
The UK economy recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic much faster than previously thought, according to major revisions of official statistics that have erased Britain’s laggard status overnight. New data published by the Office for National Statistics Friday showed that by the end of 2021, UK gross domestic product was actually 0.6% larger than in the final quarter of 2019 — before the pandemic struck — rather than 1.2% smaller as previously estimated. The ONS had said as recently as last month that UK GDP had still not reached its pre-pandemic size by the second quarter of this year. The dramatic revisions mean the UK economy has grown much more…
According to private payroll processor ADP, US employers hired 455,000 new workers in June. Meanwhile, in its monthly tally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said 105,000 new workers were hired. But for August, the two arrived at similar estimates — ADP reported on Wednesday that 177,000 new workers were added last month, and on Friday the BLS reported 187,000 new hires. It’s not uncommon for ADP and the BLS to arrive at quite different answers. At the same time, it’s not unusual for them to be similar. But they almost never arrive at the same exact number. This begs the question:…
Qantas Airways said on Tuesday that long-serving CEO Alan Joyce would exit the company two months earlier than previously flagged as a reputational turbulence engulfs Australia’s flagship carrier. Joyce’s early retirement will see CEO Designate Vanessa Hudson, the first woman to lead the century-old airline, take charge on Wednesday. The accelerated departure comes after Qantas on Monday apologized for its service standards falling short and acknowledged it was suffering reputational damage, less than two weeks after it reported record annual earnings underpinned by strong travel demand. Australia’s competition regulator last week sued it for allegedly selling tickets for more than 8,000…
