Bud Light’s parent company is having a miserable year. But there’s at least one prominent investor who believes in Anheuser-Busch: Bill Gates’ foundation trust. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust last quarter bought 1.7 million shares of Anheuser-Busch, valued at around $95 million, according to a regulatory filing, signaling that Gates has confidence in the beer company that has been dealing with a steep sales slump of one of its biggest beers. Gates’ foundation trust bought the stock around the time A-B reported earnings that fully encompassed the fallout from Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Its decision to send a customized can…
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has said interest rates are close to their peak, but that they may still have further to rise. He told MPs “we are much nearer now to the top of the cycle” of rate rises. The Bank has hiked rates 14 times in a row as it tries to slow the fastest pace of price rises among the world’s big economies. It is expected to raise borrowing costs again later this month, taking the Bank rate to 5.5%. The theory is that raising interest rates makes it more expensive to borrow money, meaning people…
The boss of Ryanair has slammed a report on the flights chaos seen over the bank holiday as “rubbish”. Michael O’Leary claimed the findings “downplay the impact on the aviation industry” and said the report was “full of excuses”. The UK’s air traffic control system was brought down in a “one in 15 million” event, the head of air traffic services, Nats, said on Wednesday. Hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled as a result on 28 August. Industry group Airlines UK argues that carriers incurred huge costs in providing accommodation and putting on more flights for customers who were…
Japan on Thursday successfully launched a rocket with a lunar lander at its fourth try this year, after previous attempts were foiled by bad weather. The lander, dubbed the “moon sniper”, is expected to attempt a Moon landing in February if all goes well. Japan has twice failed to reach the lunar surface in the past year, amid setbacks for its space programme. It is bidding to become only the fifth country to land on the Moon, after the US, Russia, China and India. Two weeks ago, India made history when it successfully landed a spacecraft near the south pole of the…
US Open 2023 Results: Daniil Medvedev Overcomes Heat To Beat Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz Wins
Daniil Medvedev reached the US Open semi-finals by beating Andrey Rublev in hot and humid conditions that he said would cause a player to “die”. The third seed appeared to struggle with his breathing but beat his fellow Russian 6-4 6-3 6-4 on Wednesday. “One player is going to die and you are going to see,” he said into a camera during the match in New York. Medvedev faces Carlos Alcaraz next after the defending champion beat Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-2 6-4. Spain’s Alcaraz, 20, saw off five break points on his way to an efficient victory over the German…
A strike planned to start at two major liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia has been delayed as talks between Chevron and unions continue. The series of work stoppages were due to start from Thursday in the dispute over pay and conditions. Workers will now delay their strike action until 06:00 on Friday Perth time (22:00 GMT Thursday). Concerns about the stoppages recently pushed up prices in natural gas markets. “We will continue to work through the bargaining process as we seek outcomes that are in the interests of both employees and the company,” a Chevron Australia spokesperson said.…
China’s exports have dropped for fourth month in a row as the “world’s factory” struggles with weak demand at home and abroad. Exports fell 8.8% in August compared with a year earlier, while imports dropped 7.3%, official figures show. However, those declines were not as bad as expected and an improvement on the previous month. China is facing several post-pandemic challenges, including a property crisis and weak consumer spending. A slump in global demand for Chinese-made goods is having a major impact on a key source of growth for the country’s economy. On Wednesday, a new report by the US…
On any given day, strolling down an Indian street, you will encounter billboards featuring Bollywood stars endorsing various products. But over the past year, posters for the G20 summit have cropped up in every corner of the country. They are taped to electricity poles and stuck behind tuk-tuks, and have been showcased on massive LED screens. The posters prominently display India’s official G20 logo, featuring a globe nestled within a blossoming lotus – a design that has drawn comparisons with the symbol of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Accompanying them are photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The message…
California’s legislature has become the first in the US to approve a bill banning caste discrimination. Legislators said the measure would protect people of South Asian descent who allege unfair treatment. The governor must now decide whether to sign the bill into law. Seattle became the first US city to ban caste discrimination in February. The caste system in India dates back over 3,000 years and divides Hindu society into rigid hierarchical groups. The measure, which passed on Tuesday by 31-5, was sponsored by Democratic state senator Aisha Wahab, who said it would add caste as a protected category in…
A nationwide manhunt has been launched for a former soldier suspected of terror offences who escaped from prison on Wednesday morning. Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, was awaiting trial at HMP Wandsworth in London after being accused of leaving fake bombs at a military base. It is believed he escaped via a prison kitchen by strapping himself to the underside of a food delivery van. Extra security checks at airports and ports have led to long delays. The Prison Service is working with the Metropolitan Police to “urgently investigate” how Mr Khalife escaped. A working theory is that Mr Khalife had…
