Exclusive: CDC Hopes New ‘Wild To Mild’ Ad Campaign Will Tame Skepticism About Flu vaccines
Some Americans have given up on flu shots because almost everyone remembers a season when they got one and then got sick anyway. Now the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to reset expectations about what these annual vaccines can and can’t do. It’s rolling out new ads it hopes will increase confidence in the vaccines with a clear, straightforward message: The flu vaccine won’t keep a person from getting sick, but it will tame that infection, taking it from “Wild to Mild” — the tagline for the new campaign. Dr. Bill Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, thinks the CDC is…
People in the UK are among the least likely to say work should always come first, according to a new survey. According to the study, people now are more likely to say it would be a good thing if less importance was placed on work than they did 40 years ago. But this view varies depending on age, the survey by King’s College London’s Policy Institute found. While millennials are much more likely to see work as less important, the opposite is true of older generations. According to the World Values Survey, 73% of people in the UK say work…
China has banned the use of iPhones for central government officials, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. Shares in Apple tumbled 3.6% on Wednesday following the news, closing at $182.91 in New York. It marked the biggest daily drop in a month. Before Wednesday, Apple had risen 46% this year. The WSJ reports that managers have been notifying staff of the ban via chat groups or meetings. CNN has reached out to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Apple (AAPL), but has not received a response. A source who regularly deals with Chinese central government agencies…
“I had a moment of realisation of just how much we’d have to design, there’s a lot of space in space!” Todd Howard, game director of Skyrim and Fallout 4, is speaking to the BBC ahead of the launch of his most ambitious project to date. Starfield is a sprawling space epic, giving players the freedom to navigate the stars in search of action and adventure. Howard admits candidly that this new release, “ended up being much larger than anything we’ve done. At times we thought, ‘are we in over our heads?'” It’s not surprising, given the scope of the…
TikTok has opened its first European data centre to alleviate fears over Chinese state surveillance. The firm says European users’ data is now migrating to servers in Dublin, as part of its ongoing response to data privacy concerns around the video-sharing app’s links to China. TikTok, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, says it has never given data to Beijing. Critics fear that the Chinese state could request access anytime. The video-sharing giant is also allowing a European security company access to audit cyber-security and data protection controls. TikTok has called this “Project Clover”, nodding to the pivotal role…
Infertility affects 7% of the male population. Now artificial intelligence (AI) may be about to help solve the problem. Dr Steven Vasilescu says that the AI software developed by him and his team can spot sperm in samples taken from severely infertile men 1,000 times faster than a highly trained pair of eyes. “It can highlight a potentially viable sperm before a human can even process what they’re looking at,” he says. Dr Vasilescu is a biomedical engineer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), in Australia, and founder of medical company NeoGenix Biosciences. The system he and his colleagues…
The United States government is seeking more information about the Huawei Mate 60 Pro, a Chinese smartphone powered by an advanced chip. The new flagship device, which reportedly includes a new 5G Kirin 9000s processor developed specifically for Chinese manufacturer Huawei, recently shocked industry experts who didn’t understand how the company would have the technology to make such a chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign chip technology. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said during a White House press briefing Tuesday that the US needs “more information about precisely its character and composition” to determine if…
China’s Top Chipmaker May Be In Hot Water As US Lawmakers Call For Further Sanctions After Huawei ‘BreakThrough’
Shares in SMIC, China’s largest contract chipmaker, plunged on Thursday, after two US congressmen called on the White House to further restrict export sales to the company. The comments came after Huawei Technologies introduced the Mate 60 Pro, a Chinese smartphone powered by an advanced chip that is believed to have been made by SMIC. Last week’s launch shocked industry experts who didn’t understand how SMIC, which is headquartered in Shanghai, would have the ability to manufacture such a chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign chip technology. TechInsights, a research organization based in…
A draft law banning speech and dressing “detrimental to the spirit of Chinese people” has sparked debate in China. If the law comes into force, people found guilty could be fined or jailed but the proposal does not yet spell out what constitutes a violation. Social media users and legal experts have called for more clarity to avoid excessive enforcement. China recently released a swathe of proposed changes to its public security laws – the first reforms in decades. The clothing law has drawn immediate reaction from the public – with many online criticising it as excessive and absurd. The…
China’s exports fell by 8.8% in August year-on-year, while imports contracted 7.3%, customs data showed on Thursday, increasing pressure on the country’s vast manufacturing sector as demand sags at home and abroad. A Reuters poll of economists had forecast a fall of 9.2% in exports and a drop of 9.0% in imports. The world’s second-largest economy risks missing Beijing’s annual growth target of about 5% as officials wrestle with a worsening property slump, weak consumer spending and tumbling credit growth, leading analysts to downgrade growth forecasts for the year. Beijing has announced a series of measures in recent months to…
