Two major threats to President Joe Biden’s reelection – his son Hunter’s legal problems and the widely held perception the 80-year-old is too old for reelection – are both causing him major pain this week. Hunter Biden was indicted on federal gun charges in Delaware on Thursday, accused of lying about his past drug abuse and violating a gun law when he bought a handgun in 2018, before his father’s presidential campaign. The weapon was later abandoned behind a grocery store by Hallie Biden, the wife of Hunter’s late brother, Beau. Hallie and Hunter were having an affair at the time. Read an annotated…

Nigeria has been hit by widespread power cuts following a “total system collapse”, electricity distribution companies say. Levels of power being generated fell to zero megawatts early on Thursday. Some supplies have been restored but only a tiny fraction of normal consumption in Africa’s most populous country. Power supplies are often erratic in Nigeria, despite its role as a major oil and gas producer. The West African country’s grid collapsed at least four times in 2022 – authorities blamed this on technical problems. The theoretical maximum amount of energy Nigeria could produce is 12,500MW, but the country normally produces a…

“The Morning Show” has the look and polish of a smart, prestige TV show, which makes its detours into stupid situations and implausible corners more frustrating. The third season of the Apple TV+ drama again weaves real-world events into its narrative, but this starrily-cast serial would fare better if it stuck to soap-opera-style fantasy instead of positioning itself as a “Succession” wannabe. Like that HBO series and Showtime’s “Billions,” mercurial billionaires factor prominently into the latest plot that drives the story this season. Here, billionaire fever arrives in the form of Paul Marks (played by Jon Hamm, who, between this and “Good Omens,” has…

US inflation accelerated in August for the second-straight month, pushed up by rising gas prices. However, core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, continued to slow, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Wednesday. The Consumer Price Index, a closely watched inflation gauge, rose 3.7% in August from a year earlier, up from July’s 3.2% rise. That’s slightly hotter than the 3.6% annual rate economists were expecting, according to Refinitiv. On a month-to-month basis, prices rose 0.6% in August, compared with a 0.2% gain in July. However, core inflation slowed to 4.3% from 4.7% for…

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hit back after Elon Musk called the self-ruled island an “integral part of China.” Speaking remotely at the All-in Summit, which took place in Los Angeles this week, Musk compared Taiwan’s relationship with China to that of Hawaii’s with the United States. “[Beijing’s] policy has been to sort of reunite Taiwan with China,” said the Tesla (TSLA) CEO, who claimed he understands China “well.” “From their standpoint, you know, maybe it’s analogous to like Hawaii or something like that, like an integral part of China that is arbitrarily not part of China mostly because ……

Nature projects to revive England’s endangered species have been awarded £14.5m of funding by Natural England – the government’s advisers. Water voles in London to crayfish in North Yorkshire will benefit from the money which will go towards breeding programmes and improving habitats. Estimates suggest 15% of the country’s species are at risk of extinction. Tony Juniper, chair of Natural England said previous recovery schemes have shown they do work. “Nature is in drastic decline all around us. It’s a dire situation, but can still be turned around. We know this because we’ve seen the population of the once-endangered bittern…
