Apple will update its iPhone 12 in France after fears about radiation, the country’s digital minister says. Jean-Noel Barrot said Apple would deliver a software update for users in the country in the coming days. Sales of iPhone 12 were halted in France after a regulator detected too much electromagnetic radiation. Apple was told to fix the issue. The firm said the new update would only apply to users in France, where it said a specific testing protocol existed. The American tech giant suggested the radiation findings were a result of that testing regime, and that it was “not a…
The number of butterflies in the UK has risen to its highest level since 2019, according to conservationists. Research by the Butterfly Conservation wildlife charity recorded more than 1.5 million butterflies and day-flying moths between 14 July and 6 August. The red admiral was the most spotted across the UK with 248,077 being recorded in the charity’s research. But long-term trend figures show many species have significantly decreased since the count started 13 years ago. Dr Zoe Randle said butterflies are a really good indicator of a healthy environment, adding that the insects have benefited from 2023’s mixed weather. “This…
A museum tucked away in rural Dorset has described how tank enthusiasts from around the world have made it an unlikely YouTube success. Bovington Tank Museum has more than 100 million views on its channel. This means it reaches a greater audience on the video sharing platform than the likes of the Louvre in Paris and the Met in New York. It puts the social media success down to the “passion and knowledge” of its expert video presenters. Nik Wyness, the museum’s head of marketing, said the bulk of the audience was based in the US and that YouTube was…
Comedian, actor and author Maddy Anholt has died aged 35 after being diagnosed with brain cancer a year ago. The BBC Radio 4 star, a campaigner against domestic abuse, learned of her condition after the birth of her daughter, her family said. Farah Nazeer, chief executive of Women’s Aid, said the charity was “devastated” following the loss of their ambassador. Ms Anholt spent her final weeks at her parents’ Devon home, her family said. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Maddy Anholt, our beloved daughter, sister, twin, friend, wife and mother, who left this world…
People should try to meditate for around 45 minutes every day to cut stress-related high blood pressure, say new guidelines. Other tips from the International Society of Hypertension include taking time out to listen to music, doing yoga and practicing mindfulness. Established medical advice – quit smoking and cut down on salt – still stands. But experts say newer “body and mind” lifestyle goals can be recommended. According to the position paper which is published in the Journal of Hypertension, there is enough scientific evidence for some less conventional approaches. One of the authors, UK blood pressure expert Prof Bryan Williams,…
An American fast food chain met with protests from the gay community last time it opened in the UK is planning to have another go. Chick-Fil-A aims to open five restaurants in the UK. The sites have not yet been chosen, but the first will open in early 2025. Its previous foray into the UK market in 2019 faced a boycott over its founders’ support for Christian groups opposed to same-sex marriage. The firm is still run by the Cathy family which founded it, but has made a policy change in recent years. It appointed its first head of diversity…
Eurozone interest rates have been hiked to a record high by the European Central Bank (ECB). The bank raised its key rate for the 10th time in a row, to 4% from 3.75%, as it warned inflation was “expected to remain too high for too long”. The latest increase came after forecasts predicted inflation, which is the rate prices rise at, would be 5.6% on average in 2023. But the ECB signalled that Thursday’s hike could be the last for now. “The governing council considers that the key ECB interest rates have reached levels that, maintained for a sufficiently long…
Luis Rubiales has entered a Madrid court to answer a criminal complaint over kissing Spanish player Jenni Hermoso, days after resigning as head of Spain’s football federation. He said nothing as he walked into the national court to face accusations of sexual assault and coercion. Mr Rubiales, 46, insists he had the footballer’s consent as she celebrated Spain winning the Women’s World Cup. The court will decide whether the case goes to trial. Spanish state prosecutors have formally lodged a criminal complaint against the former president of the football federation (RFEF), which will be heard by Judge Francisco de Jorge.…
Flights at Gatwick Airport were cancelled, delayed or diverted at short notice on Thursday due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. Gatwick confirmed 22 cancellations as of 22:00 BST, while the website FlightRadar24 said hundreds of flights in and out of the airport were delayed. The National Air Traffic Services (Nats) apologised for its staffing shortages. Gatwick Airport said it expected a normal service on Friday. The disruption comes just over two weeks after a technical issue at Nats led to 2,000 flights being cancelled across the UK. EasyJet expressed frustration at Thursday’s delays and cancellations, while Ryanair boss Michael…
A top US diplomat has questioned the absence of China’s defence minister Li Shangfu, renewing speculation of a possible corruption purge. General Li has been not seen in public for about two weeks and has reportedly missed several meetings. Rahm Emanuel, the US envoy to Japan, speculated on Mr Li’s absence, tweeting that the “unemployment rate” in the Chinese government was very high. Mr Li’s absence follows recent axings of several top military officials. Citing sources in the US and China, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Mr Li is being removed from his post. It also comes months after foreign minister…
