What Wagner’s Post-Prigozhin Future Looks Like On The Ground In The Central African Republic
On his final trip to the Central African Republic (CAR) last month, the former Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin visited la Maison Russe, or the Russian House, a cultural center near the Russian embassy in the capital, where he posed for selfies with his lieutenants and locals. The institute, and its diverse activities, are stark examples of how the mercenary group has become a stand-in for the Russian state in the country, and a symbol of the challenges ahead for President Vladimir Putin as he tries to pull back control. Since Prigozhin’s attempted coup in June and subsequent death in a plane crash outside Moscow just two months later, Russia has been engaged…
At Least 20 Killed In South Africa As Bus Erupts In Flames After Head-On Collision
At least 20 people – mostly mine workers – were killed in South Africa’s Limpopo province on Sunday after a bus they were traveling in erupted in flames following a head-on collision with a truck, state media reported. The Limpopo transport department said on Monday 20 people were confirmed dead on the scene while two others died at the hospital. It is not immediately known how many people were on the bus and if there were any survivors. The vehicles collided on a major road between Musina town and Venetia mine in the northern Limpopo province, the transport agency added. Murray and…
A cyberattack at Clorox is causing wide-scale disruption of the company’s operations, hampering its ability to make its cleaning materials, Clorox said Monday. Clorox said some of its products are now in short supply as it has struggled to meet consumer demand during the disruption. Clorox didn’t specify which of its products are affected. The company on Monday revealed in a regulatory filing that it detected unauthorized activity in some of its information technology systems in August. Clorox said it immediately took action to stop the attack, including reducing its operations. It now believes the attack has been contained. Still, Clorox has…
Falling leaves typically coincide with falling gas prices as the summer driving season comes to a close and demand at the pump wanes. Instead, gasoline prices are getting more expensive and are just pennies away from their highest level so far this year. That’s because aggressive oil supply cuts in Saudi Arabia and Russia and deadly flooding in Libya have sent crude prices on a tear. Oil prices hit a 10-month high on Friday and are on pace to hit their largest quarterly increase since Russia first invaded Ukraine in the beginning of 2022. Increasing oil prices are a bad…
Five Americans Detained In Iran Expected To Be Freed As Part Of Deal To Unfreeze $6 Billion In Iranian Funds
Five Americans who have been imprisoned in Iran are expected to be released Monday, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said, as part of a wider deal with the United States that includes the unfreezing of $6 billion in Iranian funds. The US government has designated all five Americans as being wrongfully detained. Speaking at a press conference which was shown on state-affiliated Press TV on Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the release “will hopefully be completed” alongside the other elements of the deal. The detainees are being transported to a Qatari jet, which is on standby in Iran to bring the five…
It was a tantalizing reveal, the lid of a pizza box being flipped open to show Lionel Messi’s Friday night dinner – a freshly baked pie. But in that moment, some of his many fans completely lost their appetite. It wasn’t his choice of toppings prepared by the Argentine Banchero restaurant in Miami that caused their stomachs to turn – for the record it was eight green olives and some onion rings arranged on a full bed of tomato slices, apparently without cheese – it was the timing of his social media post. “I opened Instagram and I saw Lionel Messi’s story…
At 6 pm on Wednesday evening, St Paul’s — an iconic part of the London skyline for hundreds of years — concluded its choral evensong service as usual. And just an hour later, the nearly 350-year-old Church of England cathedral was ready to stage its first techno night. The historic venue has been the backdrop for a number of grand events. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria in 1897, the funerals of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1806 and Winston Churchill in 1965 and marriage of King Charles III and Diana in 1981. But this week, as part of a…
Rescuers Call For More Help In Libya As They Face Grim Task Of Retrieving Bodies From The Sea
International rescue teams in Libya are calling for more help to retrieve the bodies of victims killed in devastating floods that swept through the eastern city of Derna, killing thousands. More than a week on, the teams said the majority of the victims’ bodies are in the water, with some corpses in areas that can only be reached using special equipment. “Bodies are severely decomposing and at one point retrieving them might not be possible,” the representative of the Tunisian mission said in a meeting held with his counterparts from Arab countries, Russia, Turkey and Italy in Derna. “We need assistance, so…
