Last month, India made history when it became the first country to land a lunar mission near the Moon’s south pole. Chandrayaan-3’s lander and rover – called Vikram and Pragyaan – spent about 10 days in the region, gathering data and images to be sent back to Earth for analysis. Earlier this month, scientists put them to bed as the Sun began to set on the Moon – to be able to function, the lander-rover need sunlight to charge their batteries. The country’s space research agency Isro said it hoped that they would reawaken “around 22 September” when the next lunar day…
YouTube has suspended Russell Brand’s channels from making money from adverts for “violating” its “creator responsibility policy”. The video platform said it was taking action “to protect” its users. It comes after the Metropolitan Police received a report of an alleged sexual assault in 2003, in the wake of further allegations about the star. Over the weekend the comedian and actor was accused of rape and sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, which he denies. “If a creator’s off-platform behaviour harms our users, employees or ecosystem, we take action,” a YouTube spokesperson said on Tuesday. The move also comes after…
Major Japanese brands are cutting ties with the country’s biggest talent agency after it was engulfed by a sexual abuse scandal. Firms including Nissan, Asahi and Suntory say they will not renew any contracts with Johnny and Associates. Toyota, which previously had a contract with one of its top stars, told the BBC it had no plans to sign any more deals featuring Johnny talents. Japan’s agriculture ministry has also said it would stop hiring the stars. Johnny and Associates is Japan’s biggest J-pop and boyband talent agency. Last month, an independent investigation into the agency found its late founder,…
A prominent Sikh leader was brazenly murdered this summer outside a temple in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The death has outraged his supporters and intensified global tensions between Sikh separatists and the Indian government. On a mid-June evening in the busy parking lot of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the city of Surrey, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead in his truck by two masked gunmen. Months later, the unsolved killing continues to reverberate, in Canada and across borders. Hundreds of Sikh separatists took to the streets in Toronto, along with a handful others in cities like London, Melbourne…
Elon Musk has suggested that all users of X, formerly called Twitter, may have to pay for access to the platform. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire said a payment system was the only way to counter bots. “We’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system,” the Tesla and SpaceX boss said. The BBC approached X for further details but has not yet received a statement from the company. It is unclear whether this was just an off-the-cuff comment, or a signal of firmer plans that have yet to be…
Another Country Has Called Xi a ‘Dictator’ And China Is Not Happy With That Description
China has lashed out at Germany after its foreign minister called Xi Jinping a “dictator” and summoned Berlin’s ambassador for a dressing down, in the latest flaring of tensions with a western democratic power over how the Chinese leader is described overseas. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock made the remarks in an interview with Fox News during a visit to the United States last week. When asked about Russia’s war on Ukraine, she said: “If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president?” The Chinese government on…

iPhone users: Today’s the day to update to Apple’s latest operating system, iOS17, and unlock a slew of new features that promise to make the iPhone experience more personal and intuitive. Apple first teased iOS17 at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference in early June, but you may have missed out on some of the details as the tech giant also unveiled its much-anticipated mixed-reality Vision Pro headset that same day. iPhone users can update to iOS17 starting Monday by clicking on the Software Update section in the phone’s Settings app. Of course, many users have gotten in the habit of backing…
Five Americans freed from Iranian detention on Monday are on their way back to the United States after initially stopping in Doha, Qatar, according to a US official and a source familiar with the matter. The five, all of whom had been designated as wrongfully detained, were freed as part of a wider deal that includes the US unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian funds. The release of the Americans brings to an end a yearslong nightmare for those who had been detained. Three of those who are part of the deal – Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz and Siamak Namazi – had all been imprisoned…
Canada Expels Diplomat Over ‘Credible Allegations’ Linking India’s Government To Killing On Canadian Soil
Canada has expelled a top Indian diplomat after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged there was “credible” intelligence linking New Delhi to the assassination of a prominent Canadian Sikh activist, in an explosive statement that is likely to further strain relations between the two countries. “Over the past number of weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” Trudeau said in parliament on Monday, adding his government would take all steps necessary “to hold perpetrators of this murder…
