The Wisconsin-based company American Foods Group, doing business as Green Bay Dressed Beef, has recalled more than 58,000 pounds of raw ground beef due to concerns of possible contamination with the bacteria Escherichia coli, better known as E. coli, according to a Friday alert posted by the US Department of Agriculture. The recall follows recent warnings issued by federal health officials about foodborne illnesses, including an alert for clinicians by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be on the lookout for infections due to the flesh-eating Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, which caused at least five deaths on the East Coast this summer. All…
Britain will delay a series of key climate targets, its beleaguered Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Wednesday at a hastily organized press conference, in a move that angered businesses and political allies and intensified the government’s assault on green policies. Sunak told reporters on Wednesday he will push back a ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035, dramatically slow down plans to phase out gas boilers, and reject calls to regulate efficiency for homeowners. The prime minister reiterated plans to expand oil and gas developments in Britain’s North Sea and drill for the fossil fuels that environmental groups condemned. He…
‘Godfather’ Of Illicit Wildlife Trade Jailed In US For Trafficking Rhino Horns Worth $2 Million
A US court on Tuesday sentenced a wildlife trade kingpin to 18 months in prison for conspiring to traffic hundreds of kilos of rhino horns, in a ruling conservation groups said would cause a major blow to the illicit business. Teo Boon Ching, a Malaysian citizen nicknamed “the Godfather” by investigators, was part of a conspiracy to smuggle illegal rhino horns to international buyers, including in Manhattan, according to a news release from the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Ching, who was already under US sanctions, was arrested in Thailand last year and later extradited to…
Tokyo Game Show has begun, and fans will have their first chance to play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Developers Square Enix are launching a demo of the long-awaited follow-up to 2020’s FF7 Remake at the annual convention held in Chiba, Japan. Critics have already had a chance to play the open-world section and brief story mission featuring fan favourite-characters Cloud Strife and Sephiroth. And the verdict? “More of the same, but it’s been supercharged”. That’s according to Eurogamer’s Ed Nightingale, who said the demo was “familiar yet fresh… the sort of magical spectacle fans will relish”. Polygon’s Oli Welsh had a similar…
Video site Rumble has hit out at a UK Parliamentary committee that asked if it would cut Russell Brand’s income in the wake of sexual assault allegations. Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the House of Commons media committee, wrote to Rumble to say she was “concerned” that he could profit from his content. But Rumble said that was “an extremely disturbing letter” and that the company would not “join a cancel culture mob”. Brand has strongly denied the allegations of rape and sexual assault. The star has 1.4 million followers on Rumble, where he posted a daily show until the…
A clear majority of Britons agree household chores should be shared – but women generally do them, an annual survey of public views suggests. More than three-quarters of respondents to the British Social Attitudes Survey said domestic labour should be split. Yet two-thirds said women do more than their fair share of washing and ironing. And most said women still do most of the cleaning and cooking. But ideas on gender roles have changed considerably since the mid-1980s. Back then, 48% agreed with the statement “a man’s job is to earn money and a woman’s to look after the home.”…

The lower house of the Indian parliament has passed a bill guaranteeing a third of seats for women in the parliament and state assemblies. First proposed in 1996, the bill had been pending for decades amid opposition from some political parties. On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed it with near unanimity after hours of fierce debate. The bill will now require the approval of lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament. If passed here, it will be sent to the Indian president for approval and become law. But it is still some way from being implemented…
India has suspended visa services for Canadian citizens amid an escalating row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil. Visa service provider BLS posted a message from India’s mission blaming “operational reasons” for the decision. Tensions flared this week after Canada said it was investigating “credible allegations” linking India with the murder of the separatist leader. India angrily rejected the allegation calling it “absurd”. Analysts say relations between the countries, which have been strained for months, are now at an all-time low. The message about the suspension of visas was first posted on the BLS website on Thursday.…
Huawei has joined the list of companies that want to be all about artificial intelligence. For the first time in about 10 years, the Chinese tech and telecoms giant announced its new strategic direction on Wednesday, saying it would shift its focus to AI.
