American consumers aren’t tired of shopping. They’re shopping more prudently, with an eye on getting the best value, sure. But they’re also rewarding the stores that are betting big on the right trends at the right time, for the right price. US households, to be sure, have remained resilient through a confusing macroeconomic environment. But they continue to be caught in economic crosscurrents of inflationary pressures on products and services, rising gas prices and the upcoming resumption of student loan repayments offset by a still-strong labor market, rising home prices and wage growth that’s rising faster than the rate of inflation, helping to keep…
‘Where Is The Phone?’ Huawei Keeps Quiet About Mate 60 Pro But Takes Aim At Tesla
Huawei has disappointed legions of fans — and US officials — eager to know more about its Mate 60 Pro smartphone, which has quickly become a symbol of the tech rivalry between the United States and China since it went on sale last month. Huawei’s consumer chief, Richard Yu, showed off a slew of new products including a tablet, smartwatch, earphones and even a challenge to Tesla (TSLA) on Monday, without going into detail about its flagship device, which has provoked calls in Washington for more sanctions against the Chinese tech and mobile giant. The United States has spent years trying to hobble…
Kosovo police said they killed three armed attackers and arrested another Sunday during a shootout in the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo. The standoff between police and 30 armed men began just hours after an ambush incident left one police officer dead and another injured. Some of the shooting is taking place near a monastery in the village, police said. “Three gunmen have been killed, two gunmen and four suspects have been arrested, the latter were found in illegal possession of radio communications, and who are suspected of being related to a terrorist group,” said Kosovo police in a Facebook post.…
Eddie Jones: Australia Sacking Under-Fire Coach Is ‘The Worst Thing’ They Can Do, Says Stirling Mortlock
Sacking Eddie Jones would be “the worst thing” Australia could do despite their troubles at the Rugby World Cup, says former captain Stirling Mortlock. The Wallabies face group-stage elimination at the tournament for the first time after being hammered 40-6 by Wales on Sunday. Having already lost to Fiji, Australia’s chances of securing the top-two Pool C spot they need to progress are slim. Jones, who was only appointed Australia coach in January, is taking much of the heat for the poor performances of the two-time world champions. He has also been criticised following a story in the Sydney Morning Herald on the morning of…
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) says it wants “to change the game” as it publishes its response to a report detailing racism, sexism, classism and elitism in the sport. Discrimination in cricket in England and Wales is “widespread” according to the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC). The ECB response accepts “most” of the ICEC report’s 44 recommendations. They include the creation of an independent regulator for the game. “The ICEC report was a massive moment for the sport and a responsibility we take extremely seriously, to bring about the changes we all want to see,” said…
Oscar-winning actress Sophia Loren has undergone emergency surgery following a fall in her bathroom at her Swiss home. The 89-year-old sustained several “serious fractures” to different parts of her hip and femur, her agent Andrea Giusti told the PA news agency. Loren’s representative also confirmed both Loren’s sons, Carlo and Edoardo Ponti, were at her bedside. A spokesperson told Reuters the surgery “went well and now she needs to rest and everything will be resolved”. Loren has had a long career, after being born into poverty in Naples. She went on to become a Hollywood star, winning an Oscar in…
Usher will be the headline performer at the 2024 Super Bowl half-time show, it has been confirmed. The R&B star follows in the footsteps of Rihanna, whose dazzling set last February also functioned as the announcement of her pregnancy. “It’s an honour of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list,” said Usher. “I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before.” The singer was one of the biggest stars of the late 1990s and 2000s, with multi-platinum hits including You Make Me Wanna, Pop Ya Collar, Yeah!,…
Louise Redknapp has pulled out of a tour with her former bandmates Eternal, amid allegations that two of the members refused to play LGBTQ festivals and Pride events. The girl group, who had hits including Stay and Just A Step From Heaven in the 1990s, were due to reunite next year. But sisters Easther and Vernie Bennett allegedly refused to play certain dates, over objections to trans issues. Both Redknapp and fourth band member Kéllé Bryan walked away as a result. Redknapp’s publicist, Simon Jones, confirmed the development in a statement to the BBC. “A message was sent to the…
A growing stream of ethnic Armenian refugees are fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan’s seizure of the disputed region last week. More than 3,000 people have so far crossed into Armenia from the enclave, which is home to a majority of some 120,000 ethnic Armenians. They left after the government in Yerevan announced plans to move those made homeless by the fighting. It also warned that those who stayed could face ethnic cleansing. Azerbaijan has said it wants to re-integrate the ethnic Armenians as “equal citizens”. The BBC has spoken to some of the refugees who arrived in the city of Goris…
A survivor of a lethal mushroom poisoning that has gripped Australia has been released from hospital, his family say. Ian Wilkinson had been left in a critical condition after eating a beef Wellington cooked by Erin Patterson. Three people, including Mr Wilkinson’s wife, died after the meal, which police believe contained death cap mushrooms, which are lethal if ingested. Ms Patterson, who is not facing charges, has said it was an accident. Mr Wilkinson left hospital on Friday after almost two months of treatment, according to his family. “This milestone marks a moment of immense relief and gratitude for Ian…
