The British government approved the development of a huge oil and gas field in the North Sea Wednesday, sealing its commitment to keep producing fossil fuels for decades to come. The Rosebank field, situated northwest of Shetland in Scotland and majority-owned by Norwegian state-owned energy company Equinor, is the largest undeveloped oil and gas field in the North Sea, with the potential to produce 500 million barrels of oil. Its development has sparked fierce criticism for the impacts it will have on the climate crisis and the UK’s ability to meet its pledge to reduce its net carbon emissions to zero by…
Shares of Evergrande Group crashed again on Wednesday as fears grew of a potential liquidation of the company, the poster child of China’s property crisis. The embattled developer’s stock closed down 19% at 32 Hong Kong cents (4 US cents), putting its market cap at just 4.2 billion Hong Kong dollars ($539 million). The slide took this week’s losses to 42%. The company has lost 99.9% of its value since peaking in October 2017. Evergrande’s woes deepened this week, after it warned that its offshore debt restructuring plan may be in trouble because of a regulatory probe into its main subsidiary in…
Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Zoleka Mandela has died of cancer at the age of 43, a family spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday. “Zoleka passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25th, surrounded by friends and family,” the statement, shared on her official Instagram account, said. She documented her battle with cancer on the account. On August 23, she wrote: “What do I tell my children? How do I tell them that this time around, I may not get to live my life as a survivor? How do I tell them everything will be okay when it’s not? I’m dying … I don’t want…
Two Ukrainian soldiers huddle around a drone controller in darkness, their faces illuminated only by its screen. “Oh, something is burning,” one says. They’ve just dropped a bomb on a Russian target. The night-time assault is part of a coordinated Ukrainian offensive push near the beleaguered eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, to which CNN obtained exclusive access. “We will be hitting their first line and our guys will be advancing on the enemy,” says one of the drone pilots, who goes by his call sign “Groove.” Ukrainian ground troops are equipped with Western night-vision equipment and have an advantage in…
The government is delaying putting into effect new environmental laws forcing developers to improve countryside and wildlife habitats, the BBC has learned. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) was meant to become a mandatory part of the planning system in England in November. But government sources told the BBC it will now not be introduced this year. Environmentalists have lamented the delay. The government said it was still committed to the policy and would soon announce a new implementation date. The Wildlife Trusts called the delay “another hammer blow for nature”. BNG policy was approved as part of the 2021 Environment Act. The…
“What I felt was fear,” says Claudia Duarte Agostinho as she remembers the extreme heatwave and fires that ripped through Portugal in 2017 and killed more than 100 people. “The wildfires made me really anxious about what sort of future I would have.” Claudia, 24, her brother Martim, 20, and her sister Mariana, 11, are among six young Portuguese people who have filed a lawsuit against 32 governments, including all EU member states, the UK, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey. They accuse the countries of insufficient action over climate change and failing to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions enough to…

India is open to looking into any “specific” information Canada provides on the killing of a Sikh separatist leader, the country’s foreign minister said. S Jaishankar was referring to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June. Tensions flared up after Canada recently said it was investigating “credible allegations” linking the Indian state with the murder. India dismissed the claim as “absurd”. Mr Jaishankar said that the Indian government had told Canada that it was open to investigating any “relevant” allegations about the murder while insisting that Delhi had no role in it. He was speaking at an…
The US government and 17 states are suing Amazon in a landmark monopoly case reflecting years of allegations that the e-commerce giant abused its economic dominance and harmed fair competition. The groundbreaking lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission and 17 attorneys general marks the government’s sharpest attack yet against Amazon, a company that started off selling books on the internet but has since become known as “the everything store,” expanding into selling a vast range of consumer products, creating a globe-spanning logistics network and becoming a powerhouse in other technologies such as cloud computing. The 172-page complaint alleges Amazon unfairly promotes its…
Target Says It Will Close Nine Stores In Major Cities Across Four States Because Of Theft And Organized Crime
Target is closing nine stores in major cities across four states, claiming theft and organized retail crime have made the environment unsafe for staff and customers – and unsustainable for business. The big box chain is part of a wave of retailers – both large and small – that say they’re struggling to contain store crimes that have hurt their bottom lines. Many have closed stores or made changes to merchandise and layouts. Nevertheless, skeptics say stores have not provided enough information to back up their claims, and at least one retailer said theft was an exaggerated issue. “We cannot…
