Maren Morris Talks Leaving The ‘Circus’ Of Country Music Culture Due To ‘People’s Bad Behaviors’
Maren Morris is elaborating why she has chosen to distance herself from country music as she evolves as a singer. In a new episode of the podcast “Popcast (Deluxe), Morris said she “couldn’t do this circus anymore – feeling like l have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviors and laugh it off.” “I just couldn’t do that after 2020 particularly,” Morris added. “I’ve changed. A lot of things changed about me that year.” During her third acceptance speech at the 2020 Country Music Awards, Morris made headlines by recognizing Black female country artists. She also became a mother that year. In the podcast, the singer…
Researchers Link Popular Weight Loss Drugs To Serious Digestive Problems For ‘Hundreds Of Thousands’ Worldwide
A new study suggests people taking popular injected medications for weight loss, including Wegovy, Ozempic, Saxenda and Victoza, may be at higher risk for serious digestive problems such as stomach paralysis, pancreatitis, and bowel obstructions, compared with those taking other types of weight loss medications. The study found risks of these events happening to individual patients appears to be rare — about 1% of people taking Ozempic were diagnosed with stomach paralysis, for example. But demand for the drugs has exploded, with tens of millions now taking them worldwide. Researchers say even rare risks like these may amount to hundreds of thousands of…
October is known to be a spooky month and stocks don’t have a good track record of getting spared. Black Tuesday, the 1929 market plunge that led to the Great Depression, 1987’s Black Monday and the beginnings of the 2008 financial crisis all took place in October, as my colleague Nicole Goodkind pointed out. And just five days into the month, it’s already shaping up to be pretty chilling. Proceed with caution before looking at your 401(k). You’ve been warned. The good news Thursday was a pretty boring day for stocks with the S&P 500, the Dow and Nasdaq all closing…
Taiwan Investigates Firms That Worked With Chinese Companies Reportedly Supplying Huawei
Taiwan is investigating whether four of its firms broke US sanctions or its own investment rules when they provided services to Chinese companies that are reportedly helping Huawei build chip factories. Emile Chang, a Ministry of Economic Affairs official in charge of reviewing investments, told CNN Friday that an “administrative probe” had been initiated this week into four Taiwanese companies named in a media report. The investigation will focus on whether their business activities in China were consistent with approvals they had been granted by the ministry, he said. If any of them are found to have violated the rules,…
Ghana – once touted as a trailblazing African economic success story – is facing an unprecedented financial crisis. This week, hundreds of protestors took to the streets in the capital Accra, calling on the governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies to resign over the loss of about 60bn Ghanaian cedis ($5.2bn; £4.3bn) in the 2022 financial year. The demonstration, dubbed #OccupyBoG, was led by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party. The protestors, dressed in red shirts, scarves and berets, chanted songs and held banners – some reading “stop the looting, we are suffering”. The opposition…
The BBC has witnessed Chinese vessels blocking Filipino supply boats to an outpost in the South China Sea. The incident took place as two Philippine coast guard ships – one of which the BBC was aboard – and two tiny commercial boats made their way to the Second Thomas Shoal. They were met by a ship marked as the Chinese Coast Guard that was five times bigger than the commercial boats. The encounter between the two sides lasted several hours. Tensions between Manila and Beijing remain high after the Philippines coast guard cut China’s barriers in disputed waters last month. Manila resupplies…
Canada Nazi Row: Governor General Apologises For Honour Given To Man Who Fought In Waffen SS Unit
Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon has apologised for a top Canadian honour awarded to a former Nazi soldier nearly four decades ago. Peter Savaryn, a former chancellor of the University of Alberta, was given the Order of Canada in 1987. It has since emerged that Mr Savaryn served in Nazi Waffen SS units. The apology comes a fortnight after a row in Canada’s parliament over an invite to an elderly Ukrainian man who had fought with Nazi Germany. Yaroslav Hunka, 98, was applauded in the House of Commons by lawmakers not aware of his history, during a visit by Ukrainian…
Financial regulators in the US are suing Elon Musk after the billionaire said he would no longer cooperate with its investigation into his purchase of Twitter, now known as X. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) asked a federal court to order him to comply with their request that he sit for a third session of testimony about the deal. The move to sue followed receipt of a letter from a lawyer for Mr Musk, which said he refused to appear as requested. It accused the SEC of “harassment”. “Unchecked government action is dangerous and the record here is troubling.…
A man who set off smoke bombs in a crowded New York subway carriage before shooting 10 people has been sentenced to 10 concurrent life terms in prison. Frank James, 64, had pleaded guilty in January to 10 counts of terrorism, one for each person shot, in the 12 April 2022 attack. Prosecutors said he planned the attack for years to inflict maximum damage. All the victims survived but “were left with long-lasting physical and psychological damage”. According to reporters inside the courtroom on Thursday, one of the victims addressed James and said: “You did something terribly evil. Your mother…
Nasa astronauts will be flying in style, with luxury fashion designer Prada helping design space suits for the 2025 Moon mission. The Italian fashion house will work to design the suits alongside another private company, Axiom Space. In a press release, Axiom said Prada would bring expertise with materials and manufacturing to the project. One astronaut told the BBC he thought Prada was up to the challenge due to their design experience. That experience has been built not only on the catwalks of Milan but also through Prada’s involvement in the America’s Cup sailing competition. “Prada has considerable experience with…
