Israeli troops have advanced more than two miles into Gaza in their expanding ground operation, a CNN analysis has found, as aid groups warned civil order is breaking down and hospitals grapple with “impossible” orders to evacuate patients. Israel over the weekend announced it had entered a “second stage” of its war against militant group Hamas and on Sunday said its ground operation in Gaza would intensify, following weeks of aerial strikes on the Hamas-controlled territory. The country was prepared for a “long and difficult” war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday, as it seeks to root out and…

An angry crowd in Russia’s mostly Muslim region of Dagestan stormed an airport where a flight from Israel arrived on Sunday, forcing authorities to close the facility and divert flights. Multiple videos posted on social media showed a crowd of people inside the Makhachkala Uytash Airport (MCX) and on the runway, some waving the Palestinian flag, others forcing their way through closed doors in the international terminal. In photos and videos verified by CNN, the crowd outside the airport held antisemitic signs that included slogans such as “We are against Jewish refugees,” and “There is no place for child-killers in Dagestan.”…

Output in Germany fell in the third quarter, official data showed Monday, increasing the risk of a recession in Europe’s biggest economy. Gross domestic product dropped 0.1% in the July-to-September period compared with the previous quarter, when it grew 0.1%, according to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). A fall in consumer spending drove the decline. On the other hand, investment by companies into machinery and equipment made a positive contribution to GDP, Destatis said. The data bodes ill for the entire area that uses the euro because Germany is the largest of its 20 economies. “Germany’s economy is once again teetering on the brink of…

The cause of Matthew Perry’s death is unknown and has been “deferred” pending further investigation. The LA Times and TMZ, which first reported the Friends actor had died, said the star was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his house on Saturday. Perry’s post-mortem examination was inconclusive, while officials await the results of toxicology tests. There were no obvious signs of trauma, an LA Police spokesperson confirmed to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner. The LA County Medical Examiner’s office updated their file on Sunday to say the case had been deferred. This usually means that the post-mortem is complete but more…

Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Land is often cleared to make way for a fairway and maintaining the pristine turf often requires a lot of water, regular mowing and the spraying of fertilizers and pesticides – none of which is good for biodiversity. In the US, with the number of course closures outweighing new openings every year since 2006, some are questioning how we should use these huge spaces – and asking whether, instead of golf, nature should be left to run its course. Conservation nonprofits and local authorities are looking to acquire golf courses that…

Portuguese police have apologised to the parents of Madeleine McCann for the way they handled the three-year-old’s disappearance. Madeleine went missing from a holiday complex in the Algarve in May 2007. A delegation of senior officers travelled from Lisbon to London earlier this year, BBC Panorama has been told. They met Gerry McCann, Madeleine’s father, and apologised for the way detectives investigated the case and treated the family. The McCann family has not commented on the apology and their daughter’s disappearance remains unsolved. In September 2007, four months after Madeleine vanished, Kate and Gerry McCann were made “arguidos” – or…
