A company in New Zealand has been found guilty of not “minimising risk” to 22 people who died in the 2019 White Island volcano disaster. Judge Evangelos Thomas criticised what he referred to as “astonishing failures” on the part of Whakaari Management. Whakaari Management licenses tours to White island. The case is the largest action of its kind brought by New Zealand’s regulator Worksafe NZ. The company faces up to NZ$1.5m ($928,000; £724,000) in fines. The US military in Japan has started to bulk buy the country’s seafood in response to a Chinese import ban after the release of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. The US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said Washington may also look into other ways to help counter China’s ban. He described it as part of Beijing’s “economic wars”. Oil prices fell again Monday as concerns about the health of the global economy outweighed fears that Israel’s move on the weekend to expand its military operations in Gaza could lead to a regional conflict.
