A spiritual successor to the popular 90s Championship Manager series, Football Manager was a hit that broke records as one of the five fastest-selling PC games ever when it was released in November 2004. Since then, the series putting players in charge of running a football club has continued to grow, with last year’s game played by six million people. But it has changed dramatically since the 2000s. Little circles bouncing about on a green rectangle have become a fully-fledged 3D simulation, which gamers often boast (or bemoan) getting lost in for hundreds of hours each year. With the release…

A hostage situation at Hamburg Airport involving a young child has ended after 18 hours, according to local police. The man, 35, drove through a security barrier and on to the airport tarmac on Saturday night with his four-year-old daughter in the car and parked under a plane. He eventually gave himself up to the authorities “without resistance”, according to police, and was arrested. “The child appears to be unharmed,” they wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The incident caused the disruption of several flights in and out of the airport. Operations have since resumed but there are significant delays. It…

The Gufrans are paying a high price to keep their children alive. Affan, seven, and Erhan, five, have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) – a rare genetic disorder that causes muscle deterioration and affects breathing. Physiotherapy appointments alone cost the family 40,000 rupees ($480; £395) a month, and their sons need constant care as they cannot sit, stand or walk independently. “We want to try gene therapy for our sons, but one dose alone costs around 175m rupees ($2.1m; £1.7m). We simply can’t afford it,” says Zeba Gufran, their mother. Zolgensma gene therapy, which the Gufrans want to try, is one…

When US President Joe Biden recently signed off on a $80m (£64.6m) grant to Taiwan for the purchase of American military equipment, China said it “deplores and opposes” what Washington had done. To the casual observer it didn’t appear a steep sum. It was less than the cost of a single modern fighter jet. Taiwan already has on order more than $14bn worth of US military equipment. Does a miserly $80m more matter? While fury is Beijing’s default response to any military support for Taiwan, this time something was different. The $80m is not a loan. It comes from American…

Elon Musk has launched an AI chatbot called Grok on his social media site X, formerly Twitter, but so far it is only available to selected users. “In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists,” he posted on X, before its release. Mr Musk boasted that Grok “loves sarcasm” and would answer questions with “a little humour”. However, early signs suggest it suffers from problems common to other artificial intelligence tools. Other models decline to respond to some questions, for example providing criminal advice. But Mr Musk said Grok would answer “spicy questions that are rejected by…

American meat processor Tyson Foods says it is recalling around 30,000lbs (13,608kg) of chicken nuggets, after metal pieces were found in the product. The firm said the voluntary recall is “out of an abundance of caution”. The nuggets were produced at one facility and shipped to distributors in nine US states including Alabama, California and Illinois. The US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said it had received one report of a minor oral injury. The FSIS said anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. The dinosaur-shaped “Fun Nuggets” affected by the recall have a…

Wall Street finally has the calendar on its side again. The US stock market tends to be volatile during the late summer months, due to a lull in economic news and earnings to catalyze a rally. Investors also take off for vacation then, resulting in lower volumes and thus choppier trading. That seasonal pattern proved almost prophetic this year: The market peaked promptly on July 31 and has struggled to find its footing since then. The S&P 500 index just logged its longest monthly streak of declines since March 2020, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has given up most…

The US economy added 150,000 jobs last month, falling below expectations but still notching a solid month of employment growth, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday. October’s job growth came in below September’s stronger-than expected but downwardly revised total of 297,000 jobs. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 3.9% from 3.8%. The resiliency of the labor market has helped to keep consumer spending strong and the economy churning, but Federal Reserve officials are hoping for more of a slowdown in order to help rein in inflation. — CutC by cnn.com

A small moment during King Charles’ state visit to Kenya may have defined it. An elderly war veteran was waiting in a wheelchair for his turn to meet the British monarch at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Kariokor cemetery in Nairobi on Wednesday morning. It’s a peaceful oasis in a bustling neighborhood where makeshift market stalls line the streets. Cpl. Samwel Nthigai Mburia fought for the British in multiple campaigns during World War II from 1939 to 1945, deploying to Ethiopia, Egypt and Myanmar. He served under the command of Charles’ mother, Elizabeth II, who was still Queen of Kenya as well as the…
