Izzy, who is 18 and works at McDonald’s, says she is still witnessing “disgusting behaviour”, months after the BBC revealed sexual abuse claims at the fast food chain. She is one of more than 160 people who have approached the BBC with new allegations after our investigation. They include claims of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying. McDonald’s said it was “determined” to root out behaviour that falls below the high standards it expects of staff. It comes as a group of ex-McDonald’s workers told the BBC they planned to take legal action against the firm, accusing it of failing to…

Popular live video chat website Omegle is shutting down after 14 years following user claims of abuse. The service, which allowed users to socialise with random strangers online, grew in popularity with children and young people during the pandemic. Omegle’s closure announcement included an image of its logo on a gravestone. Founder Leif K Brooks said in a statement that operating the website was “no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically”. The decision comes as social media platforms are facing increased scrutiny from regulators around the world. Just this week, Ofcom issued its first guidance for tech platforms complying with the UK Online Safety…

Taiwan is taking aim at China’s alleged “communist spies” ahead of a crucial presidential election, where the island’s relationship with Beijing will be on the ballot. Taiwan and China have been spying on each other since 1949, when Chinese nationalists set up a separate government in Taipei opposing Mao Zedong’s communist China. In the last 10 months, Taiwanese authorities have handed down a steady stream of charges and convictions – proof, they say, that Beijing’s espionage strategy has intensified and expanded beyond elite military circles. Retired air force colonel Liu Sheng-shu was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October for running…

King Charles became the “King of Korea Town” – or New Malden as it’s otherwise known – on a royal visit on Wednesday. This unobtrusive London suburb claims to have the biggest concentration of Korean people anywhere in Europe. The King chatted to crowds crammed outside the Seoul Plaza supermarket, on a high street full of Korean businesses and takeaways. The royal trip comes ahead of this month’s state visit to Britain by South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol. The King has described his vision of Britain as being a “community of communities”. In a matter of days the military government in Myanmar has lost control of much of its border with China. A co-ordinated attack by three ethnic insurgent armies in Shan State, supported by other armed groups opposing the government, has overrun dozens of military posts, and captured border crossings and the roads carrying most of the overland trade with China. It is the most serious setback suffered by the junta since it seized power in February 2021. After two-and-half years of battling the armed uprising it provoked with its disastrous coup, the military is looking weak, and possibly beatable. The…

Five Republican candidates for president took to the stage for the party’s third debate in Miami on Wednesday. But Donald Trump, the consistent frontrunner in the race, once again opted to skip the event and instead held a rally a short drive away. All of the contenders are trailing the former president by a wide margin and are running out of opportunities to win over voters, with the first real contest in the nomination process, the Iowa caucus, just two months away. While the candidates jabbed at one another in their answers, they were mostly prevented from responding directly to…

At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, Afghanistan were poised to create another miracle. The youthful team – 11 of their 15 players are under the age of 25 – playing only their third ODI World Cup, had Australia on the ropes. They had reduced the…

The magic has been missing this year for Disney. Last month, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary – and there was much to commemorate. Over the last century, the company has grown into one of the largest publicly traded media and entertainment companies in the world, with a market cap of more than $150 billion. But the future of the House of Mouse hangs in the balance as the company contends with a still-unprofitable streaming business, an ongoing actors strike, declining attendance at Disney World Resort in central Florida, legal battles with Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and uncertainty surrounding a CEO…
