Rescuers on Tuesday successfully drilled through to 41 men trapped inside a collapsed Himalayan tunnel, as a weekslong evacuation effort fraught with uncertainty enters its final stretch. An accident at a platinum mine in South Africa has killed 11 workers and injured 75, the mine’s operator says. Impala Platinum chief executive Nico Muller described it as the “darkest day” in the the company’s history. Coup leaders in Niger have overturned an eight-year-old law criminalising migrant smuggling in the country. The legislation allowed authorities to take action against smugglers who transported migrants through Niger’s vast desert on to Libya and Europe. But President Mohamed Bazoum – who had worked with the EU to stem the flow of people across the Mediterranean – was overthrown in July in a coup.
