Dozens of employees at Italian fashion house Gucci staged a strike on Monday to protest the company’s decision to move its design office from Rome to Milan. Although a Gucci spokesperson told CNN the proposed relocation “does not involve any staff reductions,” a regional branch of labor union CGIL described the move as “disguised collective redundancy.” Writing on its website last week, the union said the move “conceals the desire to soon cease all activity in Rome.” A later post was accompanied by photos from Monday’s demonstration in Rome, where protesters held placards with messages including “Gucci cuts but doesn’t sew.” The…

An elephant christened by activists as one of the world’s “saddest” has died at a Philippine zoo, where she lived almost all her life alone in a pen. Tributes have poured in for Mali, who was the star attraction at Manila Zoo for four decades and much beloved. But the lonely plight of the country’s only elephant was a long-running concern for animal rights activists. One of them was Sir Paul McCartney, who asked authorities to transfer Mali to an elephant sanctuary. Mali’s death on Tuesday was announced in a Facebook video by Manila mayor Honey Lacuna, who said visits…

Untreated diseases could eventually kill more people in Gaza than bombings if the health system is not restored, the World Health Organization says. Diarrhoea and respiratory infections are widespread among children in overcrowded UN facilities where almost 1.1 million people are sheltering. Patients with chronic illnesses like cancer are also receiving no treatment. The warning comes as a truce between Israel and Hamas entered a fifth day, after a 48-hour extension was agreed. The deal mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States should see an additional 20 Israeli women and children held hostage in Gaza being released in exchange…
