Executives at water companies could lose their bonuses in future if the firm they run causes environmental damage, like letting illegal sewage spills pollute a beach or river. Environment Secretary Stephen Barclay said it was time water company bosses “took responsibility”. Campaigners and opposition parties said they had been calling for restrictions on water boss bonuses for some time. Regulator Ofwat will run a consultation on the proposal later this year. This will determine whether the plan will go ahead and what types of incidents would cost someone their bonus. Mr Barclay said the sanction should apply to any company…

Most of those who wanted to fight are either dead, injured or still stuck at the front waiting to be relieved by new recruits. In the central town of Cherkasy, like elsewhere, finding them isn’t easy now that the first burst of enthusiasm and energy has faded. Ukraine is exhausted. Pavlo’s story “I don’t…

Stocks just raced past a milestone level, even as investors grapple with interest rate cuts likely coming later than expected. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in January indicated that the central bank is unlikely to start paring rates in March, with the gangbusters January jobs report all but cementing that no cut is happening next month. Investors now expect that the Fed will begin easing back rates in May or June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Stocks fell initially as investors mulled over Powell’s comments. But all three major indexes still gained in January, and the benchmark S&P 500 index on Friday closed…

Jen and John Adkins never expected to have to send a package like this. Unsteady on her feet after a medical procedure last spring, Jen emerged from a clinic with a box she needed to ship urgently. The clock was ticking; if they missed the FedEx cutoff, she and John recalled to CNN, they wouldn’t be able to get crucial test results that would affect the future of their family. They were far from their home in Caldwell, Idaho, a suburb of Boise, after a surreal six-hour drive up Interstate 84 to Portland, Oregon. Idaho’s abortion laws meant they had to…

The Kansas City Chiefs fought back to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime and win their third Super Bowl in five years. The 49ers came into the first Super Bowl held in Las Vegas as the slight favourites and were twice on the brink of victory at Allegiant Stadium. A last-gasp field goal by the Chiefs made it 19-19 to send the game into overtime, and although the 49ers edged back in front, Patrick Mahomes’ touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman meant defending champions Kansas City cemented their status as the first NFL dynasty since the New England Patriots.…

Twenty-one years ago, the National Football League would not allow Super Bowl ads from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority because it didn’t want even a whiff of gambling associated with the sport. On Sunday, the NFL will hold its first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, a city built on gambling. Even in 2003, gambling was as much a part of the NFL as tailgating, helmets and shoulder pads. Fans have been making bets on football since it was a semi-pro sport a century ago, when it was garnering far less attention than horse racing or boxing. And with the wagering on…
