Social media site Reddit’s shares have closed 48% higher on the company’s first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. On Wednesday, Reddit revealed that it had priced its shares at $34 each, near the top of a marketed range. By the close of trade on Thursday its shares stood at $50.44, valuing the firm at more than $9bn (£7.1bn). It was one of the biggest ever initial public offerings (IPO) by a social media platform. It put 22 million of its shares up for sale and, in an unusual move, offered some of the shares to the…
Donald Trump appears to be scrambling for funds to pay a $464m (£365m) fraud fine. Could the stock market ride to his rescue? Trump Media, which runs the social media platform Truth Social, is poised to become a publicly listed company, with shareholders of Digital World Acquisition Corp set to vote on Friday on whether to acquire it. Mr Trump would have a stake of at least 58% in the merged company, worth more than $3bn at Digital World’s current share prices. Digital World, or DWAC (pronounced D-whack), is what is known as a SPAC, or a shell business created…
Idaho police have captured two white supremacist gang members who have been linked to two homicides since a prison break on Wednesday. Fugitive inmate Skylar Meade, 31, and alleged accomplice Nicholas Umphenour were caught in the city of Twin Falls. Three officers were injured when Umphenour, 28, allegedly ambushed guards while they took Meade back to prison from a hospital. Police say both men are members of a prison gang – the Aryan Knights. They say it is unclear whether the escape was a “gang-sanctioned event”. Officials said the pair are suspected to have been involved in two homicides while…
A 62-year-old man is said to be recovering well and should leave hospital soon, after getting a new kidney from a pig that was genetically modified to reduce the risk of the organ being rejected. US surgeons say Rick Slayman is a “real hero” for trying the pioneering operation. The ultimate hope is to use animal organs for more transplants. Pig kidneys have been put into brain-dead people before as a test. The four-hour surgery, performed on 16 March, “marks a major milestone in the quest to provide more readily available organs to patients”, Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement. Mr…
A Rwandan-born man has been arrested in Ohio on charges of hiding his involvement in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Federal prosecutors accuse Eric Tabaro Nshimiye of concealing his involvement in the mass murders, including personally hacking people to death. Mr Nshimiye has lived in Ohio since 1995 after fraudulently gaining refugee status in the US, prosecutors say. He has previously denied participating in the genocide. He is due to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date. “[Mr] Nshimiye is accused of lying to conceal his participation in one of the greatest human tragedies of all time,” Homeland…
It was a simple at-home DNA testing kit, a Christmas day gift, that upended the lives of two Canadian men forever. Richard Beauvais, from the coastal town of Sechelt, British Columbia, grew up his whole life believing he was indigenous. But the test he took showed that he had a mix of Ukrainian, Ashkenazi Jewish and Polish ancestry. Around the same time and nearly 1,500 miles (2,400km) away, the sister of Eddy Ambrose from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who was raised in a Ukrainian family, also took a DNA test, and discovered that she was not related to Eddy. Rather, Mr Beauvais…
Former Brazil international football player Robinho has been arrested to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape. He was convicted two years ago in Italy for his part in the gang rape of an Albanian woman at a night club in Milan in 2013. Robinho, 40, was arrested at his flat in his home city of Santos. The Italian government had requested that he serve his sentence in Brazil after failing to get him extradited. On Wednesday, a court in Brazil upheld the decision and also ruled that he should serve his time behind bars instead of under house arrest.…
The US has filed a landmark lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of monopolising the smartphone market and crushing competition. In the legal action, the justice department alleges the company abused its control of the iPhone app store to “lock in” customers and developers. It accuses the firm of taking illegal steps to thwart apps seen as a threat and make rival products less appealing. Apple has vowed to “vigorously” fight the lawsuit and denies the claims. The sprawling complaint, filed at a federal court in New Jersey along with the attorneys general of 16 states, marks one of…
US actor Jonathan Majors, known for playing Kang in the Marvel films, has been sued by his ex-girlfriend. British choreographer Grace Jabbari filed a civil lawsuit on Tuesday in a New York federal court. She alleges she was a victim of battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution and defamation. It comes three months after a jury convicted Majors of attacking and harassing Ms Jabbari. He could face up to a year in prison when he is sentenced in April. Court documents submitted on Tuesday contain further allegations, with Ms Jabbari claiming Majors subjected her to a “pattern…
A mural painted by street artist Banksy on a residential building in north London has been defaced. The artwork appeared over the weekend in Finsbury Park featuring swathes of green paint on a wall behind a nearby tree, to give the appearance of leaves, with a stencil of a person next to it. But on Wednesday morning, local resident Matt McKenna, 35, saw white paint had been strewn over the wall. Islington Council has been approached for comment. Tall metal fencing has also been installed around the tree and wall. On Monday, Banksy claimed the mural as his own following speculation after…
